55 years ago, the king of Ford Mustangs was born. Starting in the 1967 model year, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 name represented the pinnacle of performance for America’s favorite muscle car. With its roots in racing, as well as big-displacement V8 engines, Carroll Shelby himself declared the GT500 as “the first real car I’m really proud of.” As he should be. And if only he was around to see the new one. Today we say hello to the limited-run 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition, wearing colors that pay homage to the original 1967 model.

2022 Mustang Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition: The Details

The 2022 Mustang Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition will come in one color combination: Brittany Blue exterior paint, with Wimbledon White stripes; the inverse of what we saw with the Shelby GT350 Heritage Edition. Like standard S550 Mustang Shelby GT500, there are two exterior stripe options: a vinyl option, or a top-dollar hand-painted option with a unique GT500 logo.

Under the hood, everything’s the same. That means an absurdly powerful, 760 horsepower 5.2L supercharged V8 engine that fires its power through a 7-speed Tremec dual-clutch transmission like an ICBM rocket, delivering a sensation of speed and drama that’s irreplaceable in the muscle car segment. And did we mention how loud these Shelbys are? Because you’ll hear this big snake coming from miles away.

Recall, however, that Ford sent off the Mustang Shelby GT350 with a Heritage Edition of its own last year. Is this farewell to the S550 Mustang Shelby GT500? Ford won’t immediately say. But with the S650 Mustang on the horizon, there’s not that much time left either way.

Mustang Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition Pricing And Availability

The 2022 Mustang Shelby GT500 will have a starting MSRP of $73,465 in the US market, plus a $1,195 destination fee and $2,600 Gas Guzzler Tax, bringing the total to $77,260 USD, before options. Adding the Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition package is an additional $2,140 with the vinyl stripes, while the GT500 Heritage Edition package with hand-painted stripes comes in at $12,140. So you’re looking at just under $90,000 USD out the door for the latter.

Dealer orders for all 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 muscle cars open on Monday, November 15, with vehicles on sale Spring 2022.

As an update for the 2022 model year, the Mustang Shelby GT500 also adds Ford Performance exclusive Code Orange – a hue that’s only shared with the Ford F-150 Raptor and Ford GT supercar.

Code Orange joins eight other new colors for the 2022 Mustang family in total, including Atlas Blue Metallic, Brittany Blue Metallic (available on GT500 Heritage and Coastal Limited Editions only), Cyber Orange Metallic Tri-Coat, Dark Matter Gray Metallic, Eruption Green Metallic, Grabber Blue Metallic and Mischievous Purple Metallic.

Muscle Cars & Trucks was founded by Manoli Katakis - an automotive media veteran that has been covering the latest car news since 2009. His journalism has uncovered dozens of major product changes, updates, plans, and cancellations long before automakers were ready to make things official.

Some highlights over the years of his reporting include the uncovering of the Zora trademark before anybody else reported on the coming of a mid-engine Corvette, as well as the dead-accurate reporting of the coming of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, two years before it hit the market, and even before the debut of the concept vehicle. This type of reporting has immediately continued here, with reports of the original seventh-generation Camaro plans being shelved, as well as what's in store for the Chevrolet Silverado.

Some of his work can be found on massive automotive media outlets, such as Motor1. He also has been a guest on the 910AM Radio Station with Detroit News auto critic Henry Payne, as well as the enthusiast-oriented Camaro Show podcast.

Over the years, Manoli has interviewed various automotive industry titans, leaders, and people that make things happen otherwise. These include figureheads such as GM CEO Mary Barra, GM President Mark Reuss, automotive aftermarket icon Ken Lingenfelter, Dodge firebrand Tim Kuniskis, along with various chief engineers of vehicles such as the Ford F-150 & Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro & Corvette, and many more.

At MC&T, Manoli is taking his journalism expertise, deeply planted sources, driving abilities, and automotive industry knowledge to new levels, covering more vehicles and brands than ever before. This is the place where you will continue to read groundbreaking stories about American performance vehicles, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles. Here is where you’ll also read insights and quotes from various automotive subject matter experts on the latest relevant products, as well as some of the latest official news from their manufacturers.

Fun facts: he also once beat Corvette Racing driver Tommy Milner in an autocross with a Chevrolet Bolt EV. The biggest vehicle he’s ever driven is a John Deere mining truck. Besides a go-kart, the smallest vehicle he’s driven has been a Hyundai i10. He’s also spent time in the cockpit of various American performance vehicle icons, including the fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, Dodge Challenger Demon, and Ford Mustang GT350R. He has reviewed dozens of trucks, SUVs, and performance vehicles over the years.

One of his favorite new vehicles on the market today happens to be the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison. He is also a card carrying member of the Sports Car Club of America, and regularly participates in Detroit Region autocross events.
