General Motors will soon sell more off-road pickup trucks than any other automaker in the world. Just as the GMC brand looks to grow and expand its AT4X family, the same is going on at Chevrolet with its ZR2 sub-brand. With front lockers, bigger tires, Multimatic DSSV dampers, improved clearance angles, and loads of underbody armor, both the ZR2 and AT4X formulas appear to be something that are ultimately scalable up and down the truck lineup, from the midsize Canyon and Colorado to the behemoth Silverado and Sierra HD trucks. But wait, there’s more. Chevrolet looks to soon debut one of the most capable off-road half-ton trucks ever with the upcoming 2023 Silverado ZR2 Bison, which was officially teased on the American Expedition Vehicles Facebook page.

American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) was paramount in the development of the Colorado ZR2 Bison, which hit the market in late 2018. It was so popular that every Bison allocation was spoken for the following year, and continues to be the case. Compared to the standard ZR2, the Colorado ZR2 Bison incorporated AEV rock sliders, AEV wheels, AEV front bumper with integrated fog lamps, hot stamped boron steel skid plates, a unique “CHEVROLET” grille insert, and AEV badging inside and out. The same will be the case for the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Bison, which MC&T first reported on before anybody else.

The Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Bison stands to be a very unique truck in the market, as both Ford and Ram have opted to lean into the high-speed desert, trophy-truck inspired off-road pickups with the F-150 Raptor and Ram 1500 TRX, respectively. The ZR2 takes more of a rock-crawling, overlanding approach by maintaining its footprint compared to the standard truck (it’s not a widebody), as well as being the only truck in the segment with a true locking front differential. It also comes with a loaded interior, and a naturally aspirated 6.2L L87 V8 engine. You’ll just have to pay Raptor money for it, despite being down on power in comparison. As for the Bison, expect further off-road capabilities, more body armor, and differentiated looks.

Stay tuned to MC&T for more 2023 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Bison news as it happens.
