The off-road pickup truck segment is shaping up to be one of the fastest growing and most competitive among automakers as of late. As off-roading and overlanding continue to grow in popularity, all three of Detroit’s automakers are cranking out trucks of various sizes, and with different levels of capability. While General Motors may not currently have an F-150 Raptor or Ram 1500 TRX equivalent in their lineup, the company’s own trail-focused offerings shouldn’t be overlooked. The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is a standout performer in its own right, while the Chevrolet Silverado Trail Boss and GMC Sierra AT4 trucks represent a step on from the standard models. Thanks to some info from our spy sources, we now know that a refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4 with some Denali-inspired equipment may be in the works. Here’s what you need to know.

2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4: Details

The current GMC Sierra HD AT4 brings a relatively mild amount of off-road hardware to the brand’s luxury pickup, compared to the Ram HD Power Wagon and Ford Super Duty Tremor. Based on the SLT trim, the AT4 packs goodies like a 2-inch suspension lift, Rancho monotube shocks, 18 or 20-inch wheels, Goodyear Wrangler tires, and underbody skid plates. A two-speed transfer case and a locking rear differential are also part of the package, which work in tandem with software add-ons like Hill Descent Control and GMC’s Traction Select System. Visually, the trucks can be identified by their unique grille treatments, dual exhausts, red tow hooks, and darkened chrome accents. This formula will likely go unchanged for the 2024 model year refresh for GM’s HD trucks.

That being said, GM has been testing a new 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4 with a set of chromed wheels that are normally reserved Denali models. MC&T sources have indicated that GMC does not intend to converge the Denali and AT4 trims anytime soon, so there’s a possibility that these Denali wheels could be offered up on the new Sierra HD AT4 as an RPO factory option or LPO dealer-installed accessory.

What We Could See Coming

Giving the 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4 a bit of Denali content is likely something that GMC customers would likely appreciate, as the Denali trims make up a huge portion of the brand’s sales.

While the idea of a more up-scale looking AT4 model is enticing in its own right, we still wish the automaker would go ahead and crank out an off-roader to do battle with the segment leaders. General Motors is more than capable of building such a machine, as the Colorado ZR2 and Hummer EV can attest to. That said, we’ll just have to wait and see what is to come.
