C8 CORVETTE GRAND SPORT SHOWS ITS VIRTUAL SELF

GM Recent Filed To Renew The Grand Sport Trademark, Firing Up Imaginations

The Corvette Grand Sport is a historic name that dates back to the very early days of the model’s racing history, and now courtesy of a rendering, we get a look at what a C8 Corvette Stingray would look like when the Grand Sport treatment is applied to it. To preface it, there’s little to no evidence that a Grand Sport is returning for the C8 generation Corvette. So this is just for fun.

The render is courtesy of Abimalec Design and shows the Stingray bodystyle wearing pieces and colors from the famed Grand Sport models of the past, along with the center-mounted exhaust found on the 2023 Corvette Z06 supercar.

Building on the base model Stingray, this C8 Corvette Grand Sport render adds a subtle rear wing, after all the sports car will require a little more downforce now that all that power and weight is ready to swing around like a pendulum. Along with the set of center exhausts, we are treated with the visual eye candy of bronze wheels.

Although Abimalec Design doesn’t explicitly say what powertrain would be providing the motivation for this imaginary C8 Corvette Grand Sport, we can bench race a little bit and say that it should be powered by the same 6.2-liter V8 as the base model, but perhaps with a slight bump up to 500 or 550 horsepower to keep it under the Z06. The chassis should also be properly tuned for a track application, rather than a boulevard cruiser or grand touring model, which is set to be the task of the C8 Corvette E-Ray.

To top it all off, it’s finished in a familiar shade of blue that has adorned Grand Sport variations of the past, along with dual red stripes over the front fenders and a white stripe down the center of the hood.

General Motors officially renewed the trademark for Grand Sport at the beginning of June, but the nameplate has yet to appear on the eighth-generation Corvette, and it doesn’t appear like the brand has any plan for its return.

Traditionally, the trim level would slot in between the base model Stingray and the higher-performance Z06. Instead, the brand will be introducing the first-ever electrified Corvette in that spot, and as far as we know will be dubbed the E-Ray.

If the Grand Sport is not going to make it to the street version of the sports car, it’s possible that Chevrolet will instead plan to bring it back to its roots on the race track, and offer a track-only version.
