THE CORVETTE EV: EXCLUSIVE DETAILS

The analysts at Automotive News have caught wind of a fully electric Chevrolet Corvette on the way by 2025, and will take the shape of a Ford Mustang Mach-E GT fighting SUV. Meanwhile, some magazines are claiming that there’s an electric Camaro sedan on the way. We’re here to clear this up. But before we get into details on what’s happening with Corvette, we need to debunk a few rumors, which we also talk about in our exclusive video just below:

The first rumor we need to debunk is that there will not be an electric C8 Corvette. There will of course be some much-talked about hybrids – E-Ray and Zora – but not a full-on EV based on the existing Y2 architecture that underpins the C8. That said, a C9 Corvette EV feels more or less like an inevitability at this point, based on GM’s current trajectory and remarks from its top executives.

The second rumor is that some magazines have speculated that this electric performance sedan will be a Camaro of some kind, which sent the blogosphere into a game of telephone. As with much of their reports in the past, this isn’t accurate. An electric Camaro sedan is currently not in the pipeline.

Electric Corvette Sedan First, SUV Second

Here’s what we understand to be happening: GM is indeed making an electric performance sedan, but it’s with a Corvette badge, and it will be in showrooms by mid-decade. This all-electric performance sedan will be dedicated to taking on the Porsche Taycan in the market. And because Porsche is the target, it’s more logical for GM to move forward with a premium Corvette brand expansion, versus using the Camaro name. Previous reports have indeed pointed to an electric performance sedan heading to Lansing Grand River Assembly, and it’s probably this electric Corvette sedan in all likelihood.

What about the electric Corvette SUV? Yes, that’s still expected, but it’s not coming as soon as originally estimated. This decision to delay the electric Corvette SUV should give a bit of breathing room to the brand new Chevrolet Blazer EV SS, which has 557 horsepower and 648 pound-feet of torque.

You’re probably thinking that GM can only build an electric SUV in order for the 2025 timeline to be feasible, right? Wrong! GM also has a low roof battery electric vehicle architecture in the Cadillac Celstiq flagship sedan that’s in the works making the 2025 timeline plausible. More details on this ultra-luxury EV are still on the way, but you can bet GM will scale this low roof BEV architecture across many brands and vehicles. So while the Chevrolet Blazer EV reveal last week did tease a low-slung skateboard platform that’s likely intended for the Celestiq, it’s just as well likely intended for a sporty electric Corvette sedan.

We Know More Than You

Why should you believe this report and not the others? Is an electric Corvette sedan considered a blasphemy? Some would of course say yes, but consider that a Corvette brand expansion could be a $12 billion idea, unlocking tons of value for General Motors. Moreover, the idea of a four-door/four-seat Corvette – much like a mid-engine Corvette that upset some of you – was kicked around decades ago, before most of us were even born. In fact, a four-seat Corvette can be traced back to 1963, while a few bespoke four-door C3 Corvettes made their way out of a coachbuilder’s shop in 1980.

All of that aside, the electric Corvette family of vehicles won’t be here tomorrow. Like everything else in the auto industry, these grand plans take time, and it’s going to take years before a Corvette brand expansion is realized.
