With the official debut of the 2022 Ford Maverick last week, the Blue Oval captured quite a bit of attention. The new compact pickup is not only significantly smaller than its stablemates, but it carries an MSRP of just $19,995 in XL spec. That makes it the cheapest truck on the market, while its standard hybrid powertrain also makes it one of the most efficient. All of that together in a single package makes the Maverick an enticing offering, and one that the Blue Oval is quite confident will sell in droves. According to The New York Times, CEO Jim Farley is so confident in the truck that he believes it could even spawn a new line of future Ford Maverick products. While Farley didn’t share a ton of specific details about this possible expansion, he did note that an electric variant of the Ford Maverick is part of that future vision.

An Electric Ford Maverick?

With the Blue Oval continuing to push towards an all electric lineup, this expansion would be a logical decision to keep the Maverick around for the foreseeable future. Ford has already shown that they can garner interest in an electric truck as well, with the F-150 Lightning proving to be a hot commodity. Considering how Wall Street has reacted to the automaker’s EV plans, we expect the electric Ford Maverick to be a no-brainer. Farley isn’t the only one in the company hinting at such a machine, however. Ford’s own Mark Levine further hinted at the possibility of an electric Ford Maverick (Ford Maverick Lightning?) on Twitter last week, sharing an image outlining the future EV. The graphic is reminiscent of the electric Bronco teasers we’ve seen, and could be a sneaky confirmation of the project.

Other Possibilities

Beyond a battery-powered offering however, there are other ways Ford could expand the Maverick. We could see an off-road oriented truck make its way to the lineup, perhaps based on the Bronco Sport Badlands model. Both vehicles share the same Ford C2 Platform along with the Lincoln Corsair and Ford Transit Connect, albeit with some changes to the wheelbase and chassis. Thanks to these unibody underpinnings however, the off-road model may not receive the Raptor nameplate shared by its larger siblings. Perhaps a Ford Maverick Timberline or Maverick OTX is in the works instead.

We could also see some other trim levels find their way onto the Maverick pickup. Currently, the 2022 Ford Maverick is only offered in XL, XLT, and Lariat trim levels. Perhaps a King Ranch or Platinum model could come down the line, bringing a bit more luxury to the compact truck. Furthermore, Ford could even look to their ST lineup for inspiration and give us the sporty truck we deserve. Whichever way they want to take things, Ford has plenty of options.

We are interested in the 2022 Ford Maverick, but would love to see where the automaker can go with the platform. A Maverick Timberline could be a genuinely fun proposition, as could an ST-inspired model. Even the electric version could prove enticing, should the automaker be able to keep the entry price reasonable. What would you like to see happen with this new truck? Let us know down below!

  1. I would have ordered a Maverick this year had they offered AWD with a hybrid. I live in snow country where FWD doesn’t always cut it and the 2.5L ecoboost engine isn’t much to write home about in terms of efficiency. It’s a pretty simple combination before you even start talking about luxury and off-road packages.
