Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley took to Twitter this past Saturday to thank the Ford Performance division for letting him rip around in the Ford Mustang Mach-E 1400. Under his tweet, in the scary place known as the Twitter comments section, Farley later entertained the idea of drag racing the Mach-E 1400 against the Tesla Model S Plaid for some all-electric bragging rights and manufacturer clout. Farley is a fairly active Twitter user, pushing mostly Ford related content in an ordinary C-suite executive fashion, much the opposite of Tesla’s Elon Musk. Perhaps the tweet, brought to our attention by Inside EVs, will catch the attention of Musk, who is known for his bold tweets and random daily activity on Twitter. If we are so lucky, we might be able to once again see Vaughn Gittin Jr. suit up just to pilot the Mach-E 1400 against a more than worthy Plaid opponent.
The Mustang Mach-E 1400
While this hypothetical drag race would be a spectacle for the decade, we’re not sure what it would prove. The Ford Mustang Mach-E 1400 is a one-off prototype that represents a purely unhinged, non-road-legal potential of performance electric vehicles that’s but a twinkle in the eye of the consumer-grade Mustang Mach-E. With seven electric motors putting out a combined 1,400 horsepower and a rear wing that can target 2,300 pounds of downforce, it’s mostly a statement of what Ford and RTR Performance (the company of Vaughn Gittin Jr.) are really capable of. And if the Mach-E 1400 wasn’t enough of a demonstration of what’s possible, Ford Performance also went on to reveal the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 electric dragster.
The Tesla Model S Plaid
On the flip side, the Tesla Model S Plaid represents an actual production car with similarly impressive numbers, which began customer deliveries this past Thursday. The electric super sedan is said to do 0-60 in less than two seconds, thanks to its 3 electric motors making a total of 1,100 horsepower. It’s priced from a steep $129,900 USD.
Yes, the Mustang Mach-E and Model S Plaid are cool. And yes, a drag race between the two would be an awesome site to see at a drag strip, powering down the straightaway sounding like a dueling set of mega-sized power drills. Perhaps if Ford Performance can deliver a production EV that can accelerate from 0-60 in under two seconds, things would be more interesting.
