If you don’t already follow the GM Design account on Instagram, you are really doing yourself a disservice. The automaker and their designers stick a ton of interesting sketches and rendering on the page every week, ranging from never-before-seen vintage concepts to future-looking designs. For fans of the automotive industry, the stuff is just too cool to ignore. Just yesterday, the automaker rolled out a sketch in that latter category, which highlights yet another possible direction that the Chevrolet truck lineup could be headed. Here’s what you need to know about this Chevrolet Silverado concept sketch.

GM Design Hints At Chevy Truck Changes

This latest Chevrolet truck concept sketch was penned by Jingxu Zhan, whose work is regularly shown off by the GM Design team. Back in March, we reported on another one of Zhan’s Chevrolet truck sketches, which we were quite fond of. This latest drawing carries some of the same design language as that earlier sketch. This leads us to believe these features may be featured on the Chevrolet Silverado refresh. The front facia, which appears to draw on the current Trail Boss model, is similar on both designs. The sketches both feature a large grille divided by a crossmember, with rugged bumper protruding from below. Furthermore, both have narrower lighting elements that what we see today. This new sketch places some LED elements directly in the hood itself, which is a new look for the automaker. Speaking of the hood, both sketches have similar designs there as well.

The side profile of both of these designs are also similar, albeit with some noticeable differences with the new creamsicle truck. The latest sketch doesn’t feature any sort of C-pillar, instead opting for a hard cut behind the window. This isn’t something we’re used to seeing on pickups, as there tends to be somewhat of a sloping line leading to the bed. Look at the current Chevrolet Silverado and you’ll see what we mean. There’s also an aggressive kick in the beltline by the rear window, which adds to the weight of the sketch. That said, the tall glass and white roof do help make the Chevrolet truck look like an inviting place to sit. The doors appear to open in a suicide-style, which is reminiscent of the old-school extended cab look. Combined with the aggressive raked front windshield, the truck looks sporty and capable.

An Updated Design Language

Now we know that a new Chevrolet truck is due soon by way of the 2022 Silverado. And while GM has made it clear that the refreshed model will place most of its emphasis on the interior, a massaged exterior isn’t entirely out of the question. Furthermore, with the Chevrolet Silverado EV just around the corner, now is a good time for the automaker to try something different with the styling of the vehicle. Zhan has been consistent with the language he’s applied to these sketches, and perhaps this is what we can expect in the near future. Should that be the case, GM Design may have nailed it.
