The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is the next step in GM’s supposed ‘All-Electric Future™,’ as a tour-de-force of what the brand can do with a new platform and Ultium batteries. It seems that flagship EV deserves a flagship production site too, as GM has just announced their Detroit-Hamtramck factory will be renamed and reconfigured into “Factory Zero.”
Factory Zero will be GM’s new center for EV production. In fact, the $2.2 billion investment into converting the plant into an electric vehicle only plant is the largest investment GM has every put into a factory. The name comes from the goal for a future with “zero-crashes, zero-emissions and zero-congestion.”
Perhaps the most exciting news in this announcement is GM’s commitment to making Factory Zero completely powered by renewable and sustainable energy by 2023, far sooner than many other production sites. The factory is also recycling concrete from renovations to make roads, and will store otherwise ignored storm water for cooling towers and fire suppression. Finally, the factory will establish a 16.5 acre wildlife habitat for Michigan species like foxes, turkeys and monarch butterflies. Adorable.

The GMC Hummer EV, based on the GM BT1 platform, will be the first vehicle built at this plant when it goes into production late 2021. It’s presumed that future electric pickup trucks and utility vehicles will share the same roof also. Even the Nikola Badger, should it actually end up getting built. The autonomous Cruise Origin ride share vehicle will also be built at GM Factory Zero.
Other future GM electric vehicles debuting in the not-too-distant future include the Chevrolet Bolt EUV, Chevrolet Silverado EV and Cadillac Lyriq SUV and the hand-built Celestiq flagship. A low-roof performance car was hinted by GM, but it’s far too early to say a Camaro EV is coming for sure, despite the GM Lansing Grand River Assembly plant, where the Camaro is built, on track to get an EV by 2024.
And as a reminder, the GMC Hummer EV will be revealed on October 20 across multiple streaming, television and social media platforms. Be sure to check MC&T for the most complete information on GMC’s upcoming flagship.
