GMC HUMMER EV TEST MULES PLAY IN TRAFFIC WITH CRABWALK MODE

Cue The Catchy Music

The GMC Hummer EV is set to become General Motors’ new flagship to spearhead their electric vehicle lineup. And because electric vehicles are all about tech, the EV off-roader is doing things a little differently. While legacy off-road trucks and SUVs like the Jeep Wrangler rely mainly on mechanical components for off-road capability, the Hummer EV adds an enormous suite of electronic systems to help it when the pavement ends. And one of the coolest GMC Hummer EV features is undoubtedly the CrabWalk feature that turns the front and rear wheels the in the same direction to help maneuverability. Now, thanks to The Fast Lane Truck, we finally see it in action on the road.

Only, it’s a little odd to see it on the road and not off of it. The system is designed for off-road use, so  drivers can move diagonally through narrow gaps. It should be extremely helpful when the Hummer’s rather large dimensions inevitably become a hinderance. On the road, it doesn’t serve much of a purpose other than being the ultimate parking lot party trick, and seeing the group slide at the same time is rather serpentine. Check it out below:

It’s the first time we’ve seen the system from a source that wasn’t GM themselves, so this is our first unstaged, unedited clip of CrabWalk. The lineup of GMC Hummer EV pickups are also clearly stained with the red dirt of the Moab region the video was filmed in. That shows just how seriously GMC is taking the off-road capability of the Hummer EV, as you wouldn’t go Moab in just any vehicle, let alone an EV.

What we really want to see now is raw spy footage of these GMC Hummer EV prototypes using not only CrabWalk, but its other trick systems like Extract Mode off-road where it really matters. Now, we’re just left wondering if we should refer to this system in action as CrabWalking.
