IS FORD BRINGING BACK THE SUPERVAN AS AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE?

Ford Transit Supervan

Ford recently revealed a short teaser that hinted at a new E-Transit van with a scheduled unveiling on June 23 at the Goodwood Festival. Now, another teaser video has been posted on Twitter by CEO Jim Farley, giving us an even better idea of what’s to come. Within the tweet, Farley mentions that Ford Performance and Ford Pro are working together on this project, which we knew based on an earlier teaser.

Ford Transit Supervan: Details

Interestingly, this video shows us four dates, and the first three are notable hints at what could be a new Supervan: 1971, 1984, and 1994. The Ford Transit Supervans were promotional vehicles built for Ford UK. In 1971, the Ford Transit Supervan first appeared; externally, the van appeared as a standard Transit. However, the wheel arches of the Supervan were flared to almost cover the wider wheels; the van also featured aerodynamics which gave it an appearance of a sports car.

In 1984, the second year in the video, the Supervan 2 was built. With a fiberglass bodyshell, the van was slightly lowered and fitted with a front airdam, large side air inlets, and a high-mounted spoiler. During tests at Silverstone, the Supervan 2 was clocked at 174 mph. 1994 marked the release of the new Supervan. This was the first time the Supervan was used to promote a new model of the Ford Transit.

Ford has been pushing towards electrifying its lineup and expanding its commercial vehicle business. Ford Europe supports the continent’s ban on ICE vehicles by 2035. Ford recently launched the E-Transit Custom, and we know that whatever is coming has similar styling. We’re likely to see a new Ford Transit Supervan in the form of an E-Transit revealed on June 23 to demonstrate the future of all-electric commercial vehicles.
