AEV CHEVROLET COLORADO ZR2 BISON SINGLE CAB NEEDS TO HAPPEN

What Else Do You Really Need?

The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison made in collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) is a very special off-roader indeed. It’s not very often that automakers partner with aftermarket companies like General Motors did here, and the end result is one of the most capable pickups on the market today. But like the regular ZR2, you’re limited to one body style: a four door crew cab.

This is mainly down to pickup truck manufacturing complexities, as there are many more trims and body styles configurations than regular vehicles. As cool as the ZR2 is, the truck doesn’t make up the bulk of Chevy Colorado sales, and this is even more true for the ZR2 Bison. Crew cab is the best for the widest range of customers, so that’s what they’ll always get. But what if General Motors let its hair down a bit and allowed a single cab model to slip through the cracks? Here is what it could look like, curtesy of a rendering by Instagram user @lycanzr2.

While the door goes further back than a single cab Colorado’s does, the rendering is pretty spot on. Having a single cab would be perfect for people that rarely use the back seats, and it would result in slightly better performance off-road. There’s less weight for the rather underpowered V6 or diesel motor to lug around, and breakover angles would be slightly better. We like the idea of the 5.3 V8 suggested in the comments. But all of these improvements are marginal, hence why Chevrolet will never build a single cab Colorado ZR2 today.

But in the mid-2000s, we wouldn’t have put it past them. Everyone remembers some of the weird and wacky cars a very different General Motors produced back in the pre-recession days, such as the Chevrolet SSR.

So even though this Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 AEV Bison will almost certainly never be made, at least we could take a moment to appreciate what a capable off-road warrior it would be, and how fantastic it looks in the signature AEV green color.

But, perhaps like the AEV Colorado Bison Tray Bed Concept, the upfitting company could find a way to get it done.

  1. I like it. I have the original, a ’94 Chevy S10 4×4 zr2 regular cab short (6′) bed and it is a great little nimble off road truck. You should do an article on how the epa’s CAFE regulations killed off the small pickup truck which is why all we see in the north American market are crew cab pickups with tiny beds.
