General Motors officially announced the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV yesterday, after reports of such a project swirled for nearly a year. The new Chevy represents the second electric truck in GM’s portfolio, as the automaker continues their push towards their zero-emissions goal. Despite coming clean about the existence of the new Chevrolet Silverado EV, GM wasn’t too keen on sharing details. We know that the truck is slated to be built at the Factory Zero site alongside both GMC Hummer EV models, and should arrive with a range of more than 400 miles per full charge. That said, a new report from Reuters has shined some new light on when we could expect the electric Silverado to arrive.

According to the publication’s sources, General Motors may try to begin production of the Chevrolet Silverado EV next year. More specifically, the source noted that production of the pickup could begin at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant in late 2022. This means the sales debut of the Chevrolet Silverado EV would take place in early 2023, as a 2024 MY vehicle. That is a quick turnaround for a new vehicle, but even an early 2023 debut will put the electric Silverado a year or so behind Ford’s upcoming electric F-150 pickup truck. As the electric truck segment begins to take shape, GM likely wants to shorten that gap by as much as possible.

There are a few  reasons as to why General Motors should be able to crank out the Chevrolet Silverado EV in a short amount of time. First and foremost is the fact that the truck will utilize the same BT1 Platform and Ultium Battery technology as the GMC Hummer EV models. This should make things a bit more straightforward at the Factory Zero site than if the truck’s were entirely different. This is also why GM reportedly has plans to build six different models at the Factory Zero site in the near future, including: both GMC Hummer EV models, the Silverado EV, an expected GMC Sierra EV, the Cadillac Escalade EV, and the Cruise Origin theme park shuttle.

Specific details related to the Chevrolet Silverado EV remain guarded at this point, but we expect leaks to continue coming. If GM truly does aim to begin production of the electric pickup truck next year, we should start to hear more about this thing in an official capacity before too much longer.
