August 28, 2014, marked the start of production for the S550 Ford Mustang, and, according to MotorTrend, on April 6, 2023, the last sixth-gen Mustang, a 2.3-liter EcoBoost in Oxford White crossed the line at Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan. Marking the end of production of the previous-generation of the pony car.
The S550 Mustang cemented its legacy as being a globally sold sports car. For the first-time ever, the base Mustang featured an independent rear suspension, while the car also offered both six-speed manual, and automatic transmissions. The base 2.3L EcoBoost engine was also supposed to appeal to customers in regulation-heavy markets like Europe, only to be discontinued in the region as customers preferred the roar of a Coyote V8 instead. Nevertheless, the S550 Mustang continued to top the global sales charts. Time and again, the sixth-gen Mustang was the world’s best-selling sports car.
S650 Ford Mustang: Continuing The American Muscle Legacy
As the S550 Mustang had the oldest customer in the segment, Ford aims to bring in young blood with the new S650 Mustang. This is especially evident in the interior, featuring video-game-like levels of customization, and a wide-open door for future downloadable content that will build on things like a Fox Body themed digital gauge cluster.
Already, we’ve seen Saleen and RTR putting together their special builds of the S650 Mustang, and that’s bound to make things even more exciting for customers. We’re sure Roush Performance is cooking up something, too.
Both the 2.3L EcoBoost and 5.0L Coyote V8 engines continue in the S650 Mustang, but feature generational improvements. With up to 500 hp, the new Coyote is the most potent yet, thanks to improved internals, higher compression, and a dual throttle-body design. The EcoBoost sees improvements such as new pistons, new connecting rods, new camshaft, new fuel delivery system, new air induction system, and an electronically controlled turbo present, to name a few things.
You can start building and getting an idea of the price for the S650 Ford Mustang now, as Ford has made the Build and Price Tool available on its website. Though we won’t go too in-depth on the configurator here, we were able to get a Premium 2024 Mustang Dark Horse with all the goodies built for an MSRP of $76,300, which includes the Dark Horse Handling Package and everything else one could ever want when going all in on the newest iteration of the world’s first muscle car. It’s unclear when production on the 2024 Ford Mustang will begin, but it likely won’t be long now.
