THIS 2020 MUSTANG SHELBY GT500 HAS A $100,000 MARKUP

Is The Carbon Fiber Track Pack Really This Desirable?

Dealer markups are one of the most irritating things to see as a car enthusiast. Automakers develop a product to be sold at a specific price, often as low as possible to attract as many customers as possible. But when these cars end up being extremely rare and desirable, dealerships take advantage of that and jack up the price in dealer markups. This hits the performance car market worse than any other segment, and it’s just what has happened to this poor 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500, discovered by YouTuber Speed Phenom.

After driving the GT500 for ourselves, we can certainly say that it’s well-equipped to slay many giants from across the pond, but the beauty of American muscle cars has always been their relative performance bargain appeal. Greasy tactics like price gouging completely eliminate that benefit.

This Shelby GT500 is for sale at Villa Ford in Orange County, California, for an eye watering list price of $206,000. It’s a very special GT500, though, with the rare and expensive Carbon Fiber Track Pack. With this option, it brings the Mustang over the $100,000 threshold to $105,890. That’s already big money for a vehicle that begins life at $26,670, but a markup of around $100,000 is just crazy. We think the dealership will have a hard time finding a buyer to pay almost double the MSRP for this GT500.

If it were closer to list price (preferably with no markup, but that will never happen), we have no doubt this 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 would sell quickly. It’s a great spec, in Iconic Silver with the painted black twin stripes. The silver paint looks great with the aforementioned Carbon Fiber Track Pack, which adds carbon wheels and a massive rear spoiler as stand out options. Less obvious from the outside is the rear seat delete, Recaro front seats, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, and carbon instrument panel trim.

Still, even as a fully loaded Shelby GT500 with the rare track pack, the over $200,000 asking price is just too much. Whoever buys this will take a serious hit in depreciation, because the used market doesn’t take dealer markups into account. More than anything, though, this Mustang demonstrates that dealer markups have taking things too far, and it’s an unfair practice that shouldn’t happen.
