When the Dodge Viper arrived on the scene back in the 1990s, it was quite literally a shock to the automotive world. The V10-powered machine was so raw and brutal that one Carroll Shelby even deemed it a worthy successor to the all-mighty Shelby Cobra. And while the Viper would go on to share the same racing success as its spiritual forefather, the car never had the same levels of sales success as its rival in the Chevrolet Corvette. That doesn’t mean folks don’t utilize these machines for some insane projects however. In fact, Will Dugas has just managed to highlight the drag racing capabilities of the Gen-2 Dodge Viper by setting a new ¼ mile world record for the nameplate. Here’s what you need to know about “The Juggernaut” Viper and its six-second pass.

“The Juggernaut” Dodge Viper

Dugas and his Dodge Viper known as “The Juggernaut” are no strangers to impressive runs down the strip. Before setting a new Viper world record at the recent Hail Mary Derby, Dugas had already piloted this machine into the sevens on several occasions. That said, he was dead-set on breaking into the sixes by the time the three-day event came to close. Of course achieving that sort of thing requires a seriously potent machine. The Juggernaut may be a Gen 2 Dodge Viper, but under the hood sits the larger 8.4L V10 from a Gen 5 car. The motor has been built, and features a pair of 88-millimeter Garrett turbochargers, a MoTeC ECU and custom wiring harness, upgraded injectors, and a complete exhaust system with dual five-inch pipes.

Running on 117 octane R Ethanol One fuel, the car cranks out a ludicrous 3,250 horsepower. For the record, that is more than double what Bugatti is getting out of their quad-turbo W16 in the Chiron. That power is sent to a set of Mickey Thompson drag radials via a built three-speed Turbo 400 gearbox. Even more impressive from a drag racing perspective, this Dodge Viper retains an independent suspension setup in the rear. When this thing does burnouts before a run, Dugas estimates that he’s spinning the tires between 160 and 180 mph. The Juggernaut Viper also does some of the craziest wheelies we’ve ever seen.

6.891 Seconds At 205.16 MPH

Over the course of the Hail Mary Derby event, Dugas and his team were able to push the car into the sixes, eventually tying the 6.963 second ¼ mile record previously held by a Dodge Viper. Not content with this feat, the team would go on to run an insanely fast 6.891 second pass at 205.16. That was enough to break the previous record they tied, which was held for a staggering nine years. The time is shocking in itself, but the drama-free nature of the pass is arguably more impressive.

Drag racing is often seen as an easy form of motorsports. The cars just have to run in a straight line, after all. Of course this couldn’t be further from the truth, and the engineering behind record setting cars like this Dodge Viper is top-notch. I mean, how many 3,250 horsepower cars do you know of? Combine this with the fact that The Juggernaut isn’t some stripped out racer, and the record is that much more impressive. Congratulation Mr. Dugas, we can’t wait to see what’s coming next.
