A junkyard or barn find of a rare classic car is always bittersweet. On one hand, it’s great to find a car and rescue it from wherever it was left to die, but it’s still sad so many classics are left in horrible condition in the first place. But for some, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. That’s just the case for this 1968 Chevy Camaro Z/28 that was left to rot in a field for many years. The original pictures were taken by one JB Coppedge, but were posted to the popular Junkyardclassics Instagram. Their account has hundred’s of posts with abandoned classic cars like this one.

What makes this Chevy Camaro Z/28 special is that it’s getting a full restoration. And quite the restoration it will need to be. The car was half buried on one side, there is rust everywhere, and some of the windows appear to be missing. And that’s all we can see on the outside, who knows how salvageable the interior, chassis and engine are.

In the end, though, it’ll definitely be worth it. The original Chevy Camaro Z/28 was the high point of the first generation Camaro lineup. It was marketed as a race-ready Camaro for SCCA Trans-Am series, and featured many upgrades over other Camaro pony cars in the lineup.

Horsepower was significantly underrated at 290 hp to comply with racing regulations. In reality, it made closer to 360 hp. Buyers could also option dual four-barrel carburetors, which boosted output to a hearty 400 hp. It also featured upgraded suspension, disc brakes at four corners, and a revised transmission. It also got the signature racing stripes seen on this Camaro.

The Chevy Camaro Z/28 was also a rare bird. This 1968 model is one of only 7,199 made that year, out of 235,147 Camaros in total. Because of this, it’ll be a valuable car with a great story when its full restoration is finished.
