Offering Absurd Levels of Downforce

The 2024 Pikes Peak Hillclimb is taking place later this month on June 23, and it’ll be an epic chance to watch an assortment of vehicles race their way up the legendary mountain. One vehicle in particular caught our attention: the Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck EV Demonstrator. Ford has recently unveiled the truck on what appears to be Pikes Peak International Raceway, and if nothing else, the truck will be eye-catching for attendees of the event.

Ford F-150 Lightning Demonstrator Will Take To Pikes Peak

The first thing many will notice about the truck is the aerodynamic components that line it, replacing the side view mirrors, skirting the overall truck, and then the massive wing at the back. Ford has stated that the wing can produce 6,000 pounds of downforce at 150 miles per hour. Now, considering that the F-150 Lightning sold to the public weighs in at around 7,000 pounds, and this truck has had some serious modifications to the body to shave weight, the down force may be either even or greater than the overall weight of the vehicle.

Beyond the wing, Ford hasn’t revealed any information about the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck’s powertrain. However, it’s likely a similar or a more advanced version of the SuperVan 4.2, which took on the mountain climb last year. Using a tri-motor that produced 1,400 horsepower, the SuperVan whistled its way up the 12.42-mile course in 8:47.682 seconds. The Van was just one of two vehicles that managed to make it up the hill in less than nine minutes, where the other was Robin Shute, who drove his 2018 Wolf TSC-FS, finishing at just 8:40.080.

The record for the Pikes Peak Hillclimb is 7:57.148, achieved by Romain Dumas, who drove a special electric time attack car: the Volkswagen ID.R Pikes Peak. That’s the time to beat, and we’re sure if any vehicle has a chance of doing it, the Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck may have a puncher’s chance. At the very least, we would like to see it outpace the SuperVan.

Zac's love for cars started at a young age, after seeing the popular Eleanor from Gone In 60 Seconds. From there, fascination and enthusiasm blossomed and to this day the Ford Mustang remains a favorite. His first job started out detailing cars, but also provided the opportunity to work on restoration including an 1968 Ford Mustang, Pontiac Firebird, and a C3 Corvette, though he left that job before further work and experience could be had. From there, he was a detailer at a car dealership before quitting that job to try and finish college.

Much of his free time while studying was spent watching YouTube videos regarding new cars, or off-roading. 4WD247 is a personal favorite channel which rekindled a dying flame in car enthusiasm, now tailored towards trucks and SUVs and the fun that can be had building up an overlanding rig, and going on adventures, though, that chapter remains unwritten for the time being.
