FORD RAPTOR, JEEP WRANGLER SINK AMID BOAT RESCUE

They’re Not Exactly Made For The Water

The go anywhere and do anything mantra that has helped to sell a great number of off-roading machines can be a little bit of an oversell at times. There is no doubt that models like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Raptor can tackle even the toughest of trails, but they aren’t exactly made for water travel. One family in Cedar Lake, Indiana found this out the hard way after trying to rescue their sinking boat.

Video of this whole ordeal was uploaded to the Region News Source Facebook page, and it doesn’t do a great job highlighting the aquatic abilities of the trucks. As the story goes, a family on Cedar Lake turned to their off-road vehicles after their boat, a $300,000 Pavati model, began to sink not far from their dock. After this desperate attempt, the family was left to be recorded as they lost three vehicles to the water that day. The commentary from the neighbors in the video is worth the watch alone.

The video starts with the Jeep Wrangler and the F-150 Raptor already in the water, quite a bit deeper than what either factory would likely advise. The Raptor in particular doesn’t seem to be a great swimmer, as we watch people scramble to push the sinking truck away from deep water. With one last flicker of the daytime running lights, the F-150 appears to succumb to the intake of water.

The Jeep in all fairness does continue to run throughout the video, even making a final mad dash towards the now rapidly sinking wake boat. This plan is soon abandoned, as the sounds of emergency vehicles grow in the background. Apparently the only vehicle the owner didn’t use to try and rescue the boat was his helicopter, which is probably for the best.

While both the Jeep Wrangler and the Ford Raptor are more capable than most vehicles when it comes to going where there is no pavement, we really don’t suggest that you stuff them in a lake up to the belt line anytime soon. Your insurance adjustor likely won’t be very fond of you after that.
