The fourth-generation Chevrolet Silverado HD began production starting the 2020 model year. For this generation, the Silverado HD incorporates the General Motors T1XX body-on frame platform shared with the smaller Silverado 1500 half-ton truck. As such, both the exterior and the interior of the vehicle have been totally redesigned from the third-generation Silverado HD. In addition, the exterior design sees the most differentiation from the Silverado 1500 than ever before, with the only shared sheet metal being the roof panel.
A new 6.6-liter gasoline L8T V8 engine, developed with Navistar, was also made available, while an updated L5P Duramax Diesel engine incorporated a new 10-speed automatic transmission that continues to carry the “Allison” branding, but isn’t actually built by Allison like before.
Chevrolet debuted the truck at GM’s Flint, Michigan plant on February 5, 2019, which is also where production takes place.

Exterior Design
The Chevrolet Silverado HD exterior was completely redesigned for the 2020 model year, following the styling of the Silverado 1500. Although the 1500 loses the distinctive square fender arches, HD models retain them. The design was controversial when first debuted, and the jury is still out on whether or not it’s a successful one. But whether or not the styling is beautiful, it is definitely functional.
Larger everywhere, the 2020 Silverado HD has distinct styling whether you choose the 2500 or the 3500. Both feature active aero shutters for improved efficiency, while diesel models have a larger hood scoop for better cooling while towing.
Each trim also features unique styling cues, with wheel sizes ranging from 17 to 20 inches, Bowtie and CHEVROLET branded grilles, and a smattering of chrome accents.
Around the back is what Chevrolet dubs the DuraBed, a unique cargo box with exclusive features to the Silverado HD. The numbers speak for themselves, but the bed also features a 120-volt power outlet, bedsteps on every box style, 12 tie-down rings, and a power up/down tailgate that can be operated with the key fob, if desired.

Fourth-Generation Chevrolet Silverado HD Powertrain
The Silverado HD receives an all-new engine for 2020, a 6.6-liter gasoline-powered V8 with 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. The engine features 22 percent more torque and up to 18 percent more towing capability compared to previous 6.0-liter gas engine.
The 6.6-liter DuraMax V8 engine is now paired with a 10-speed Allison-branded automatic transmission, and in tandem the powertrain can tow up to 35,500 pounds, a 52 percent increase from previous models. Cooling for the Duramax has also been improved by way of a 2.5-inch larger fan with variable speed.
To support the towing capability, the axles have been strengthened, and are now turned by an 11.5” ring gear in gasoline powered models, while a 12” ring gear supports the turbo-diesel-powered units. The driveshafts have also increased in diameter by 30%, and the frame has been strengthened with boxed rails to handle bigger loads, and adding to a combined GCWR of 43,500.
Both powertrains feature Autotrac active two-speed transfer cases on 4×4 models, which allows the truck to seamlessly shift between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive based on road conditions.
Technology Highlights
Not only does the 2020 Silverado HD feature a new engine, but also the technology to help it perform to the best of its abilities. The new Advanced Trailering System utilizes 15 camera views to help see in every direction, and includes a unique transparent trailer view that allows drivers to see right through the trailer. Adding to the visual aid is also HD Surround Vision, Bed View, and an in-vehicle Trailering App, which can display electrical diagnostics, trailer tire pressure and temperature, viewable through the myChevrolet mobile app.
Additional available technologies and hardware designed to enhance trailering include:
- Auto Park Brake Assist automatically initiates the electronic parking brake to help hold the truck’s position and vehicle creep when hitching a trailer.
- All-new Park Grade Hold Assist enhances hill hold by using braking effort at all four wheels to help keep the truck in place for an extended length of time.
- An enhanced integrated trailer brake controller works with the trailer profile in the Advanced Trailering System to recall a specified trailer’s most recent gain setting.
- An enhanced Tow/Haul mode remains engaged on the next key-on cycle, for up to four hours and includes a reminder that the feature is engaged.
- Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control.
- Trailer Sway Control and Proactive Rollover Avoidance.
- Auto Grade Braking and Diesel Exhaust Braking.
- Enhanced Digital Variable Steering Assist dynamically optimizes power steering according to driving scenarios and enables features like road pull compensation.
Fourth-Generation Chevrolet Silverado HD Interior Design
The interior of the Silverado HD is now roomier, with more space in every direction for class leading front head- and legroom. Rear seat passengers also benefit with nearly three more inches of legroom in Crew Cab models. The overall layout and styling remains largely the same, but the interior of the Silverado has always been handsome. An available heads-up display sets the truck apart from its competition.
