2018 FORD GT RACES 2005 FORD GT: VIDEO

Ford GT vs Ford GT

When the newest generation of the Ford GT was launched in 2017, it was clear that it was a very different car from its predecessor, or anything the automaker has ever come up with prior. While the car from 2005 was an homage to the GT 40 race car of the 1960’s that famously beat Ferrari at Le Mans, the 2017 model was a homologation racer that had its sights set on Ferrari once again. By lopping of two cylinders and adding turbochargers to comply with class regulations, as well as utilizing cutting-edge tech such as a carbon fiber hull and a dual clutch transmission, Ford fundamentally changed the GT for it’s 2017 relaunch.

To its credit, the elder 2005 Ford GT has become an icon as a truly old school American supercar, and has shot up in value over the last few years. The ones of this era have also become popular to modify for drag racing, particularly for standing mile events. One such highly modified Ford GT, owned by M2K Motorsports, was able to reach a record setting top speed of and incredible 300.4 mph at the Texas Mile in 2019.

While which flavor of the Ford GT you prefer is a matter of personal taste, there is no doubt the new car is objectively faster stock for stock. Automotive YouTubers Shmee150 in his 2018 GT, and the host from DragTimes in his modified 2005 model, decided to see which generation was superior in the most American way possible: a quarter mile drag race.

It was actually five drag races to be specific, four from a standstill and one rolling race. The races were documented on both YouTube channels, with Shmee150 including a section on how each car drives on the street as well. While the 2005 GT came with 550 horsepower from the factory, DragTimes’ car has been modified by Heffner to produce 650 wheel-horsepower. That is 60 horsepower more than the 2018 GT owned by Shmee150 recently put down on the dyno. Despite the power difference, the newer car is lighter than its predecessor and thanks to its DCT, is equipped with launch control. While we won’t spoil the race results for you here, the ending of this GT on GT battle are more surprising than you would think.
