Ford’s biggest SUV is getting a refresh for the 2022 model year, and will take place on September 21st at the Motor Bella festival in Pontiac, Michigan; the stand-in event for the twice-canceled North American International Auto Show that would have taken place in Detroit. With the debut of the 2022 Ford Expedition is expected to be the introduction of both the Timberline and ST trims to go with the recently launched King Ranch model.

Exciting New Trims

It’s safe to assume that a 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline trim wouldn’t be too far off from what we already see with the Explorer Timberline. A limited-slip rear differential along with a standard Terrain Management System with seven drive modes. The wheels will likely be different on the Expedition, and the front-end design may also be different like that of the Explorer. In addition, the Expedition would likely get steering calibrated stabilizer bars and springs explicitly tuned for the 2022 Expedition Timberline trim. The ride height may also be slightly higher than that of the base Expedition. Just don’t expect something like a Bronco Raptor.

Another trim we may see arrive is a 2022 Ford Expedition ST following the introduction of the Edge ST and Explorer ST. The Explorer ST became the quickest Ford with an ST badge yet going from 0-60 in 5.5 seconds. We may get to see the Expedition with a high output EcoBoost engine similar to what’s found in the F-150 Raptor, or we may see it being a purely aesthetic trim, such as an ST-Line.

2022 Ford Expedition Mechanical Upgrades?

While the Ford Expedition and Ford F-150 share a common architecture, and the mechanical bit of the full-size Ford SUV are assumed to be bankrolled by America’s best-selling pickup truck, we’re not expecting a major shakeup under the hood.

Take the 2022 Lincoln Navigator refresh, for example. The update revolved mostly around interior upgrades and new trims, while the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 and 10-speed automatic transmission remained the sole powertrain, rated at 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. A Ford Expedition Hybrid isn’t expected until around 2024, and we don’t expect a V8 in this SUV, despite its popularity of the V8-powered GM SUVs. But when you’re budgeting $30 billion through 2025 for electric vehicles, suppose you gotta cut corners somewhere.

Either way, watch this space on September 21, where we’ll report precisely on new changes and trims Ford has for the 2022 Expedition. Or attend Motor Bella for yourself.

Zac's love for cars started at a young age, after seeing the popular Eleanor from Gone In 60 Seconds. From there, fascination and enthusiasm blossomed and to this day the Ford Mustang remains a favorite. His first job started out detailing cars, but also provided the opportunity to work on restoration including an 1968 Ford Mustang, Pontiac Firebird, and a C3 Corvette, though he left that job before further work and experience could be had. From there, he was a detailer at a car dealership before quitting that job to try and finish college.

Much of his free time while studying was spent watching YouTube videos regarding new cars, or off-roading. 4WD247 is a personal favorite channel which rekindled a dying flame in car enthusiasm, now tailored towards trucks and SUVs and the fun that can be had building up an overlanding rig, and going on adventures, though, that chapter remains unwritten for the time being.
