Electrification is coming; for some automakers, it’s all about fuel economy. Meanwhile, others are more focused on the performance benefits that can be achieved. A few amazing examples happened at the turn of the last decade: the LaFerrari, the Porsche 918, and McLaren P1. Only problem was they all ran about a million dollars or more. It seemed like such engineering was to be reserved only of the wealthiest among us, and not for somebody with a Corvette budget. However, that budget seems to have gotten a lot bigger with the C8 Corvette generation, and the world was recently given a drip of anticipation on what’s next for America’s Sports Car. And it sounds like it could be pertaining to an upcoming hypercar variant that’s expected to be called ‘Zora.’
According to Fox News, during the General Motors Investor Day presentation in New York City, GM President Mark Reuss revealed that two new Chevy sports cars are on the way in 2024. Unfortunately, images were redacted from the livestream of the event. Still, one was referred to being the upcoming version of the C8 and something that “you won’t be able to imagine from a performance standpoint.”
We at MC&T have already been covering the possibilities on this mysterious unimaginable performance Corvette and based on what we know; there’s plenty of reason to get excited about it, even if it is a hybrid. Shoot, especially if it’s a hybrid.
C8 Corvette Zora: What To Expect
This upcoming C8 Corvette is known as Zora and is expected to be one that’s motorsports tested, like the Mercedes-AMG One. At the core of the upcoming Corvette hypercar’s powertrain will be a 5.5L flat-plane crank V8 that can spin at 8,600 RPM, as seen with the 670 horsepower 2023 Corvette Z06. This LT6 V8 engine architecture has been battle tested for a couple of years now with the IMSA championship-winning Corvette Racing C8.R race car. But the Zora’s mill is expected to incorporate a set of turbochargers and could also receive the name LT7. This engine is expected to be even more potent than the one found in the C8 Z06, which already brings record-setting performance to the table.
The powertrain of the C8 Corvette Zora will come with battery assistance and a set of electric motors, easily means it’s expected to deliver four figures of horsepower. Additionally, like every other Corvette, it will still be made on an assembly line. As such, the Zora will likely cost a fraction of what the Mercedes-AMG One. We’d speculate it to be a tenth of the price, which means Chevrolet will be keeping many supercar companies awake at night.
The C8 Corvette Zora will be an outstanding performance car and will likely set the expectations of future performance from Chevrolet at a high standard. We are currently living in an exciting time for Corvette as it’s pulling out of the sports car realm and into supercar and hypercar territory. Just think, the Zora is expected to have at least 1,000 horsepower, and all of that power is going to get sent, not just to the rear wheels, but all four wheels at once. We can’t wait for the tarp to come off of this one.
