Depending on your age, you may associate the Cadillac name with glorious tail fins, Northstar V8s, or the V sub-brand. Born out of GM’s desire to take the fight to the German sport sedans, Cadillac’s V brand has pumped out some of the coolest American performance cars of the past two decades. Thanks to Instagram User DIY Auto, we now have some video clips of the upcoming Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing popping into a local car meet.
The true successor to the all-mighty CTS-V, the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing sits above the standard CT5-V in the lineup. This isn’t because the elusive Blackwing V8 is found under its hood, because it absolutely isn’t. Instead the sedan carries the 6.2L supercharged LT4 V8, found in the previous-gen CTS-V. Instead nomenclature this is the result of some not-so-clever marketing from General Motors. The “V” moniker has now replaced the previous V-Sport trim, with Blackwing coming in as the new range-topper. Confusing no doubt, and seemingly terrible for the brand cache they’ve built up over the years.

Regardless of what they’re calling it, this new Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing brings some serious muscle car noise. In a segment that is dominated by twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8’s of all varieties, the old-school pushrod brings some attitude that the Europeans just don’t have anymore. The employees driving these camouflaged sedans made this clear when they drove through the parking lot of High Octane Cafe and Bakery here in Metro Detroit. A pretty popular spot for car meets and the likes, it’s clear this appearance was by no means an accident.
If the previous-gen CTS-V is any indication of how this car will drive, then we all have a lot to get excited for. Not to mention the fact that the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing is slated to be offered with a tried-and-true stick shift. The return of a proper muscle car wearing a business suit appears to be in order.
