How do you convince mainstream moms and dads to buy into the electric vehicle lifestyle that the Ford Mustang Mach-E is putting down? It’s actually pretty simple: just enlist Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo to reprise their National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation roles as Clark and Ellen Griswold.
The ad makes an updated play on one of the 1989 holiday classic’s most iconic scenes – this time starring the brand new Mustang Mach-E.
Scene: Clark has the family assembled outside in the frigid Chicago winter for what’s expected to be a triumphant moment when he finally powers up the litany of Christmas lights decorating the family home.
Except, things don’t go quite according to plan.
That’s when the Mach-E steps up to save the show, with Ellen quickly using Ford’s first EV to provide power for the holiday display. Naturally, the family is not only dazzled by Clark’s decorations but also enamored with the newest member of the Mustang family.
“It’s great to be back for another Christmas with my on-screen family and its rotating assortment of kids – and I have Ford and Mustang Mach-E to thank for paying me to do it,” said Chase. “I suppose you’re expecting some sort of riff on electric cars, but I can say with 85% certainty that this thing probably won’t cause any blackouts in your neighborhood when you plug it in.”
However, there is one major question mark from the commercial. As of now, the Mustang Mach-E doesn’t have the capability to power your house using vehicle-to-grid (V2G) or vehicle-to-home (V2H) capabilities, so either this was creative liberty taken for the sake of advertising or a very sly hint towards a future feature.
The spot debuted during the Saturday Night Live Christmas special, and already the ad has close to 4 million views on YouTube. Look for the Mustang Mach-E to start showing up on city streets near you in the coming new year.
