Introduced in 2019 and officially being available for purchase in December of 2020, the Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV will reportedly be receiving a battery update as soon as the final quarter of 2021. The Mustang Mach-E that has a striking resemblance to the Tesla Model Y in overall range, but Ford wants to provide more efficient, faster charging through an OTA update.
OTA Update To Improve Ford Mustang Mach-E Charging
Ford’s first order of business for the Mustang Mach-E is to better the overall fast charging cap, which stops at 80 percent to preserve the longevity of the battery pack. Once it reaches this threshold, the charging ability is regulated to only 12 kW, a trickle charge compared to its fast charging capabilities which sit between 160 kW and 75 kW.
According to InsideEVs, Ford wants to push the fast charging capabilities to at least 90% state of charge in this new software update. The current state of charging is okay however room for improvement is apparent so Ford wants to take action. Ford has been mindful in trying to protect its batteries life cycle, which is said to keep 70% of its initial capacity for 8 years. Ford wants to both improve its charging experience while at the same time protect its battery degradation. This sounds tricky but Ford knows it can provide the Mach-E with a seemingly welcome improvement to its customer base.
Currently, the peak of charging comes about 15-minutes into a charging cycle and Ford believes that this and the overall charging curve of each cycle can be improved via software and data analysis.
It wouldn’t be surprising for further improvements and adjustments to software based on those findings after this update, to come to fruition. As of now, everything remains to be seen. There is no definite date set for the release of the OTA update just yet, but InsideEVs claims that it can be expected as early as this upcoming winter.
