The 2022 GMC Hummer EV has emerged, with General Motors referring to it as a first-of-its kind supertruck. As gearheads we all know how serious a machine must be to receive the “super” prefix, but GM doesn’t appear to be mucking about. We all knew the truck would make gobs of power, but the new Hummer packs a ton of hardware and software aimed at making it a top-flight off-roader. The Hummer EV specs for off-roading, to say the least, are quite impressive.

The basis of any good off-road vehicle starts with its 4×4 system and suspension layout. Luckily for fans of Hummers gone by, this new truck isn’t lacking in either department. All GMC Hummer EV models are underpinned by the brand’s new e4WD system, which features an electronically locking front differential. Opt for a three-motor model and you’ll also receive a rear virtual locker and torque vectoring, while all models come with four-wheel steering. Combined this setup is what allows for CrabWalk mode, making it possible to rotate the truck without moving forwards or backwards. The system is so good that GMC says that the truck can climb a 60-percent grade forwards or in reverse, scale an 18-inch vertical obstacle, and wade through water more than two feet deep.

The new Hummer rides on GM’s Adaptive Ride Control suspension, which allows for 13 inches of suspension travel. The suspension also gives the truck 10.1 inches of ground clearance, but that isn’t a set figure. The Hummer comes with something called Extract Mode, which raises the truck up to provide 15.9 inches of ground clearance. Many of the advertised Hummer EV specs are based on this mode, as detailed in the table at the bottom of this post. This is aimed at helping drivers escape even the most difficult of situations off-road. The truck comes standard with 22-inch wheels and 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler rubber, though the truck is designed to accommodate 37-inch tires from the factory.

The Extreme Off-Road Package, which is standard on the Edition 1 models, also includes a set of 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch tires. That package also brings some added underbody armor, as well as the new UltraVision system. Thanks to a series of 18 cameras placed around and underneath the vehicle, owners will be able to utilize this “live spotter” function to avoid any potential damaging obstacles. Rather neat indeed.

The cameras aren’t the only tech features in place to help you off-road. The Hummer EV will arrive with five drive modes, four of which are pre-configured with one customizable My Mode. These modes allow drivers to tailor the vehicle’s behavior, including adjusting the torque distribution, four-wheel steering, ride height, shock damping, throttle maps, brakes and interior sound enhancement. GMC says the modes suit a wide range of situations, ranging from towing a trailer to crawling over boulders. The truck will also provide drivers with one pedal driving capabilities, with configurable regeneration and off-road tailored functions.

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV wears the name of a vehicle known for its service in some of the most extreme conditions on Earth. While we still have a while to wait before we can see just how capable the new electric truck is, the numbers speak for themselves. The table below shows the various GMC Hummer EV specs in its different settings.
