Rivian has a busy year ahead of them with the launch of the electric R1T pickup and R1S SUV, plus the electric delivery van the automaker is building for Amazon. But it’s looking to be hugely successful this year as well, with many preorder holders lined up to purchase their R1T and R1S. For Rivian to establish itself not only as an EV manufacturer, but a premium off-road truck and SUV company, they need to nail this year. That’s no easy feat for any startup, and Rivian recognizes that some of their customers may be slightly apprehensive about getting a new manufacturer’s first ever vehicle. Luckily, Rivian is giving R1T and R1S customers one of the best new truck and SUV warranties we’ve ever seen.
The warranty information is surprisingly hidden on Rivian’s website, but luckily a Rivian Forums member managed to find it. The headline comprehensive warranty is a five year 60,000 mile plan, and it covers, “all parts and labor necessary to correct defects in materials or workmanship of any parts manufactured or supplied by Rivian.” Of course, it only covers any faults in normal operation. The best part of the warranty is the additional coverage, however.
The Rivian R1T and R1S battery and drivetrain get the same warranty coverage, at 8 years or 175,000 miles, whichever comes first. The battery warranty covers all internals and enclosure, while parts that connect the battery to the vehicle are covered in the comprehensive warranty. The battery warranty also cover retention of 70% of original capacity. Dip below this, and Rivian will replace the battery and the new battery will be covered in the remainder of the warranty period. The drivetrain, meanwhile, covers the electric motors, gearbox assembly, dual power inverter module and high voltage cables.
Finally, there’s an eight year unlimited mileage Perforation Corrosion Warranty. Rivian says, “coverage includes the repair or replacement of any original body panel that rusts completely through, from the inside out.” Like the battery coverage, any replaced body panels ride out the remainder of the warranty.
While many electric vehicle’s online or subscription based purchase plans make them seem slightly disposable, like a smartphone, it seems like Rivian wants their customers to keep their R1T or R1S in the family for quite a while. It’s a great warranty that should give initial and future customers peace of mind.
