RIVIAN SOFTWARE UPDATE ADDS NEW “SOFT SAND” DRIVE MODE TO R1T AND R1S

Electric Vehicle, Or Dune Buggy?

Off-road enthusiasts know that sand, mainly soft sand, can be unrelenting when traversing over it. But, it doesn’t have to be as much of a hassle if you know just what to do. Or, if you own a Rivian R1T or R1S, you simply put the car in the desired driving mode and have some fun, even if it’s the treacherous soft sand. We imagine a few trips to the Silver Lake Sand Dunes inspired this idea.

Rivian R1T And R1S: Soft Sand Mode Details

A recent over-the-air update gives the all-electric truck and sport utility vehicle software that optimizes traction and stability control, decreasing the driver’s chances of getting stuck in the sand in the middle of nowhere. This is achieved by softening the driver’s inputs. Through the software, the accelerator pedal’s mapping initiates and maintains momentum over sand by allowing the gradual buildup of throttle at low speeds. Meanwhile, it also offers a more aggressive delivery at high speeds along with softer regenerative braking.

The software also changes the suspension’s damping and ride characteristics for the Rivian R1T and R1S when driving over undulating surfaces at high speeds, soaking up the ruts and holes that one may encounter. Rivian highlights that the Soft Sand mode isn’t optimal for most other terrains, only deep sand, such as sand dunes. The Off-Road All-Terrain mode is the better option when taking on different obstacles.

The Rivian R1T pickup can be reserved for $1,000 if you’re willing to wait until late 2023 for delivery. The R1T starts at $67,500 for the Explore Package, which features the dual-motor powertrain and the standard battery. For that price, customers get heated front seats and a highly desirable heated steering wheel. Additionally, the truck features an air compressor, recycled textile floor mats, driver-seat lumbar adjustments, vegan leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, and matte-black interior finishes. If the SUV is more to your liking, you’ll be paying slightly more with a starting price of $72,500 before any options for the R1S.

Zac's love for cars started at a young age, after seeing the popular Eleanor from Gone In 60 Seconds. From there, fascination and enthusiasm blossomed and to this day the Ford Mustang remains a favorite. His first job started out detailing cars, but also provided the opportunity to work on restoration including an 1968 Ford Mustang, Pontiac Firebird, and a C3 Corvette, though he left that job before further work and experience could be had. From there, he was a detailer at a car dealership before quitting that job to try and finish college.

Much of his free time while studying was spent watching YouTube videos regarding new cars, or off-roading. 4WD247 is a personal favorite channel which rekindled a dying flame in car enthusiasm, now tailored towards trucks and SUVs and the fun that can be had building up an overlanding rig, and going on adventures, though, that chapter remains unwritten for the time being.
