LATEST AMERICAN MADE INDEX DOESN’T FEATURE A SINGLE FULL-SIZE PICKUP IN TOP-10

The Chevy Silverado, Ram 1500, And F-150 Are Pushed Further Down Than You’d Expect

The annual American Made Index communicates to consumers which vehicles are indeed “the most American.” This year’s list however does not feature a single full size pick-up in its top-10. Not the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra or Ram 1500, even as plants manufacture them domestically.

The study from Cars.com ranked 95 vehicles on the following criteria: location of assembly plant, parts content, country of origin of engine and transmissions, and U.S. based manufacturing workforce. The top dog? Tesla, which took the 1, 2, 5 and 6 spots with the Model Y, Model 3, Model X and Model S, respectively. The Lincoln Corsair was number 3, and Honda Passport number 4. The Illinois-made Jeep Cherokee took number 7.

The Corvette, which is often high on the list, came in 11th place this year on the American Made Index. The Ford Ranger (the most American in 2020), Ford Bronco, Dodge Durango, and Ford Expedition came in 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th, respectively.

The only truck to make the 2022 Cars.com American Made Index is the Honda Ridgeline which comes in eighth and is built in Lincoln, Alabama. It beat out the big pickup truck manufacturers such as Ram, Ford, and GM for being the most American made. The GMC Canyon sits outside the top-10 in 12th and the Chevy Colorado sits right below that in thirteenth; both of which move up a couple spots from last year’s ratings, and both are built in Missouri. The Ford Ranger improves its position also going from 28th in 2021 to 17th this year.

You have to jump down to twenty-first place in order to get to the first full-size pickup, which is the Ford F-150. The Chevy Silverado 94th on the list, which gets edged out by the Jeep Gladiator and Ram 1500 Classic. It’s widely understood that chip shortages, various countries in and out of lockdowns, and war in Ukraine have hampered production across the board, disrupting supply chains, which could have an effect on the parts content of America’s best selling vehicles. Perhaps next year we will see full-size pickup trucks further up this list.
