We covered the Callaway Camaro SC630 a few months ago, declaring it a relative performance bargain. It’s got a whopping 630 hp for $52,990. That’s around $10,000 less than a base level Camaro ZL1, the only way to get anywhere near that power directly from Chevrolet. Now, CarScoops reports the Callaway will also be available in Canada, giving a great bang for your buck option.
It’s not like the Callaway Camaro SC630 will be available everywhere like the ZL1, though. Only GM dealer Wilson-Niblett Chevrolet in Richmond Hill, Ontario will offer the tuner special. Still, it may be worth it to buyers because it keeps the full GM factory warranty, and adds a Callaway 3 year/36,000 mile factory warranty for all of the aftermarket goodies. For those unfamiliar or in need of a refresher, the SC630 is based on the Camaro LT1, which is your cheapest entry into a V8 Camaro from Chevy, slotting beneath the SS. Callaway then attaches their Genthree supercharger, along with an intercooler, intake and ECU tune.
Output is rated at 630 hp and 610 lb-ft of torque, 30 hp and 40 lb ft of torque down on the ZL1. With that near $10,000 discount (which is expected to convert similarly to Canadian dollars), you will be sacrificing some handling performance in the Callaway compared to the ZL1. Other than the power modifications, the only other thing Callaway adds to the packages are a few special badges.
The ZL1, on the other hand, has revised aerodynamics, wide sticky tires, a bespoke suspension system with GM’s magical Magnetic Dampers, unique chassis tuning, an upgraded manual or automatic transmission, and so on. For all around performance, the Callaway Camaro SC630 can’t beat the ZL1.
But if straight line speed thrills for a discounted price is what you’re after, all without fear of attempting the mods yourself and voiding any warranty, the Callaway is for you. Even if you live in Canada.
