CHEVROLET SILVERADO EV, OR SOME KIND OF ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK, TO DEBUT AT CES

The Electric Truck Was Teased Last Month

According to reports, included among the concept vehicles General Motors plans to debut at the digital Consumer Electronics Show next month is a Chevrolet badged EV pickup truck. Considering the leak from last month, we’ll stop short of calling it a Chevrolet Silverado EV.

According to Bloomberg Green, GM is planning to show several concept vehicles from its entire suite of brands, one of which is expected to be an electrified version of a Chevrolet pickup during a virtual presentation during the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The reveals will follow a presentation focusing on electrification by GM CEO Mary Barra on January 12, 2021, at 9 a.m. ET.

Barra is expected discuss the automaker’s electrification strategy and affirm just how serious the company is taking the EV market. As we’ve been hearing, GM plans to have 30 electric vehicles in its lineup by 2025, including the GMC Hummer EV, and the Cadillac Lyriq.

It’s thought the presumed Chevrolet Silverado EV will land on the plug-in-hybrid side of the equation versus a fully-fledged electric pickup truck like the 2022 Ford F-150 Electric. The truck was teased during the 2020 Barclays Automotive Conference.

Chevrolet declined to comment on the CES concept, but the concept is expected to utilize GM’s Ultium battery system. GM has already announced Chevrolet would have an electric pickup truck in production by 2025. It’s thought the electric pickup truck will reside under the Silverado umbrella, but that the full EV model could branch out as a stand-alone vehicle. Based on what we’ve seen, it’s a far cry from the Chevrolet Silverado we know today, but the naming recognition could be too statistical for the marketing department to try something new.

This goes with the assumption that whatever EV pickup we see debuting under the Chevrolet banner will eventually show up wearing a GMC badge at some point. Of course, a Chevrolet Silverado EV would also be the basis for PHEV versions of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade.

The first vehicle of GM’s upcoming electric onslaught will be the 2022 Hummer EV pickup truck, which should get here in the fall of 2021, followed later by an SUV counterpart. The Hummer EV pickup will rightfully be judged against peers like the F-150 Electric, the Tesla Cybertruck, the Rivan R1T, and whatever Ram is planning.
