Each year, the racing-obsessed folks over at Grassroots Motorsports Magazine host the $2,000 Challenge. Just as the name suggests, the event requires competitors build an autocross or drag car for just $2,000 and pits the builders against each other in a series of bracket-style races. And while it may not sound like much up front, the $2,000 Challenge is no joke. It attracts some of the best and brightest builders in North America, who manage to slap to spritely racers that would dominate any local autocross event and ridiculously fast nine-second drag cars – all for just $2,000 or less. And for 2019, Grassroots Motorsports has teamed up with famous American drag racer “Big Daddy” Don Garlits for the drag racing portion of the $2,000 Challenge – who will drive a Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye muscle car in the even to provide a benchmark for competitors.
The Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye Garlits will be driving is actually the car that nonprofit Dream Giveaway is offering up as part of its Hellcat Dream Giveaway sweepstakes. With an aftermarket Magnuson supercharger and some other engine and exterior upgrades, Garlits’ Hellcat is good for over 1,000 horsepower. Beating the father of drag racing won’t be easy, then – especially if you’re in a $2,000 project car.
Grassroots Motorsports readers can also get themselves double the amount of entries in the Dream Giveaway sweepstakes if they use the code “Grassroots” at checkout. Garlits may beat you on the track, but surely winning the car he was driving when he did it would be a good consolation prize, right? The car is also signed by the racing legend.
The $2,000 Challenge with the Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye will be held at Gainesville Raceway on Florida on October 25th and 26th.
