The Ford Mustang may be the best-selling sports car in the world, but that doesn’t mean that owners haven’t found ways to make their muscle car’s their own. In fact, the Ford Mustang is routinely heralded as one of the most frequently modified vehicles on the road, thanks in no small part to the extensive aftermarket that supports the iconic pony car. Ford Performance themselves provide owners with a litany of part options, ranging from cosmetics to full-blown supercharger kits. Now though, the team over at Ford Performance has rolled out some slick new carbon fiber accessories for the range-topping Mustang Shelby GT500 model.
The S550 Shelby GT500 is the most hardcore variant of the Ford Mustang we’ve seen yet. Powered by the 675 horsepower 5.2L Predator V8 engine, this muscle car is equally as comfortable at the drag strip as it is at the road course. If the latter venue is more your speed, Ford offers the Carbon Fiber Track Package to add some lightness to the 4,000+ pound pony. That package includes 20-inch carbon fiber wheels, a GT4-spec wing, splitter wickers and a carbon fiber instrument panel. None of the new parts from Ford Performance are included in that package, but rather serve to enhance the styling of the all-mighty Shelby. Customers can now order a hood vent and rain tray kit, a front splitter and belly pan combo, a front bumper insert that separates the grilles, and a piece of rear decklid trim.
“Authenticity and personalization are what our Mustang Shelby GT500 customers want, and our new carbon fiber performance accessories provide an elevated track-proven look from every angle,” said Ford North America vehicle personalization, planning and operations manager Mark Wilson. “Beyond leveraging this high-performance material to reduce weight, we track-tested and validated its durability at Ford Performance Racing School in North Carolina.”
These new pieces are the first carbon fiber accessories ever offered by Ford Performance, which is exciting in itself. That said, the cosmetic upgrades don’t come that cheap. The Shelby GT500 hood vent package rings in at $1,185, whereas the new carbon splitter will run you $1,820. The front bumper insert and rear decklid piece carry MSRPs of $1,150 and $575, respectively. All together that’s $4,730, which is not exactly a bargain, but much more affordable than the $18,500 Carbon Fiber Track Pack or $10,000 Carbon Fiber Handling Pack. For that money you do shed nine pounds off of the curb weight of the car, however.
All four of these S550 Mustang Shelby GT500 accessories are now available for order through the Ford Performance website, and promise to be easy to install. Should you be looking for a way to emphasize the performance on offer from this range-topping Ford Mustang, this may just be the way to go. That said, we won’t be too surprised to see owners finding a way to attach these bits to their non-GT500 offerings. I mean, they do look pretty sweet, after all.
