As Ford’s Mustang Shelby lineup has become a more serious and track capable vehicle in the S550 generation, we haven’t seen a convertible version of the GT350 or GT500. But the original owner of Carroll’s name, Shelby American, has an answer for Mustang fans who want big power with unlimited headroom, and it’s the 2021 Shelby Super Snake Speedster. Complete with flying buttresses and 825 hp, it leads the 2021 Super Snake lineup, and only 98 will be made to commemorate what would be Carroll Shelby’s 98th birthday, the late automotive icon and founder of the company.
The headline stats are the same across the entire Super Snake range, with that 825 hp curtesy of a Whipple Supercharged Coyote V8 and Shelby Extreme cooling system. That’s more power than Ford’s Shelby GT500, and Shelby American will even sell it to you with a six speed manual, another option Ford doesn’t offer. The drivetrain and transmission have also been bolstered to handle the hearty power figures. Finally, the Coyote V8 will howl even louder thanks to a custom Borla exhaust. This is where the Speedster model should really come into its own.

Handling gets similarly thorough upgrades. Shelby American have given the Super Snake Speedster and regular models upgraded custom springs, reinforced rear suspension half shafts, and rear stabilizer bar. There are also upgraded Shelby brakes, lightweight 20 inch alloy wheels and sticky performance tires.
The styling is beefed up considerably from a standard GT as well. With the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, you are stuck with pre-facelift styling, but Shelby American use the 2018 and newer facelift model. From here, they’ve given wider front and rear fenders, a custom hood with a functional air scoop, unique front bumper with brake cooling vents, and new rear bumper design.

On top of these modifications, the 2021 Shelby American Mustang Super Snake Speedster gets that signature rear tonneau cover, and also comes with optional stripes that cover the body and cover. It’s a distinctive look that will certainly set those 98 lucky customers apart from every other Mustang on the road.
Unsurprisingly, the 2021 Super Snake doesn’t come cheap. If you’re supplying your own Mustang GT, expect to pay $80,000 for the conversion. And if you don’t, it jumps to $133,785. Luckily, Shelby American sells their 2021 Super Snake models with a 36,000 mile warranty. And we doubt they’ll have any trouble selling the 98 Speedster models. With 825 hp, a manual option and looks like that, we’re envious of every buyer. It’s a suitable 98th birthday gift to Mr. Shelby.
