The Ram 1500 TRX and the Ford F-150 Raptor represent the pinnacle of factory-built off road pickup trucks. And while these two Detroit rivals have already started their battle, it is hard not to feel like something is missing. More specifically, it feels as if General Motors is missing out on the action. Sure they have the Trail Boss and Colorado ZR2, but those aren’t quite on the level of the offerings from Ram and Ford. Now though, the folks over at Autoblog may have just captured evidence of something rather special: a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 prototype out testing in the wild. GM Truck fans, this is what you need to know.

You can view the photos here.

Long time readers of MC&T may recall that we were the first to confirm that a Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 was in the works all the way back in September. In that report we noted that the new ZR2 should arrive with an upgraded suspension system complete with next-gen Multimatic DSSV dampers, electronically locking differentials front and rear, as well as unique facias to assist with ground clearance.

Under the hood buyers should expect to find the 6.2L L87 V8 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox. While 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque isn’t quite as much as the competitors from Ram and Ford, a no-nonsense V8 is always a welcome addition. Despite rumors, there isn’t a supercharged V8 in the works at the time of this writing.

Thanks to the prototype spy shots uploaded by Autoblog, we can clearly see evidence of some of these changes. A quick look at the front fascia shows a tucked up design with a skid plate, not unlike the one found on the smaller Colorado ZR2 model. This is also true of the hood, which appears to feature the same power bulge as its smaller sibling.

This Silverado ZR2 prototype also appears to ride higher than a standard truck, which is evidence towards the upgraded suspension system. Furthermore, the tires fitted to the prototype look to measure 35-inches, which is larger than those on offer from the Trail Boss model. All good signs if you ask us.

Our initial report on the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 back in September noted that this truck isn’t expected to arrive until the 2023 model year. But based on these photos, and a dose of intel, the ZR2 appears to be launching with the 2022 model year with the rest of the refreshed Chevrolet Silverado 1500 family. Look for the updated trucks to reveal themselves later this year, with production starting early next year.
