There are a variety of reasons that someone might need to purchase an armored vehicle. Whether it be a career in security, politics, or something a bit less kosher, there are people who have to consider encountering gunfire on the move. There is an entire industry that serves these folks, beefing up and crafting armored vehicles of all types. Ford themselves are involved in this business, with some help from their Global Fleet Sales department. They offer an entire lineup of vehicles based on the Ford Ranger pickup, including the utterly awesome Ranger Armored Assault Vehicle.

The Ranger Armored Assault Vehicle is a vehicle Ford says is perfectly suited for use in the mountains of Afghanistan, the deserts of Africa, or the jungles of Southeast Asia. Or when SHTF. The description may be a bit on the nose, but you understand what they are getting at here. This isn’t like the Ranger your neighbor has in the driveway, as this rolling bunker takes “Built Ford Tough” to a whole different level.

This armored Ranger is powered by a 3.2L turbo diesel, which is designed to run on even the poorest quality fuel. It isn’t a powerful lump however, only offering 147 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque. You won’t be going anywhere fast in this thing, but speed isn’t the only way to survive. The truck features a load of opaque body armor, as well as some bullet-resistant glass. Should your attackers be better armed, the underfloor of the truck has been designed to withstand the blast from two hand grenade explosions. A forced air ventilation system also ensures some protection against atmospheric dangers. The truck’s bumpers have also been replaced with bash bars, and the truck rides on a high-ride off-road suspension. The heavy duty wheels feature a tire-retention system, and they protect a set of high-performance brakes.

Unlike typical armored vehicles, the Ford Ranger Armored Assault Vehicle allows its occupants to fight back. The bed of the truck has been replaced by an armored command station, complete with universal gun racks, a rear gunner compartment, and several well-placed gun ports. It is a bring-your-own-arsenal type of situation however.

This is just one of the several security models the Blue Oval has on offer. The Ford Ranger Light Tactical Vehicle is available for those who need a bit less protection, as it ditches the armor and command center for a traditional troop-carrier style bed. There’s also a line of Everest armored SUVs, which are also based on the mid-size pickup platform. None of these trucks are able to be purchased here in the States however, should you be currently dialing up your local dealership.
