Mecum’s Kissimmee auction over the August 27-29 weekend has lots of exciting cars coming up for auction at the end of the month, but a bright orange 2020 Camaro is one of the best. It’s not any bright orange Camaro though, it’s an incredibly rare 2020 COPO Camaro in a one-of-one color called Hugger Orange. COPO models are essentially fully prepped NHRA drag racers straight from the factory. With only 69 produced each year, it’s not too often one comes up for sale, let alone in such a rare color.
The 2020 COPO Camaro has two engine choices, with this example featuring the more powerful 350 cubic inch LSX-derived V8. With LSX-SC cylinder heads and a 2.65L Magnuson supercharger, this engine produces a nice “570 hp” – but its 8-second quarter mile time would imply otherwise. Because, while that may not seem like a lot in a world with 807 hp Dodge Challenger Super Stocks, 760 hp Mustang Shelby GT500s, or even 650 hp Chevy Camaro ZL1, the drag specific setup allows the COPO Camaro to cross the quarter mile in an insane 8.5 seconds, two seconds faster than any of these street legal muscle cars.
This is possible through a number of drag racing specific modifications, some visible and others not. Most obvious are the huge Hoosier drag radial tires, providing immense traction off the line. Then there’s the rear wheelie bar and parachute, a hint at the straight line speed of this monster. Under the skin, power is sent through a TH400 automatic transmission to a solid rear axle.
The interior certainly isn’t stock either. It’s fully stripped out in the name of weight savings, with no rear seats, removed interior trim, and lightweight front bucket seats. While the air vents remain, they are blocked off. You don’t need AC in a purpose build, non-road legal dragster.
As mentioned, this 2020 COPO Camaro is finished in Hugger Orange, and is the only COPO finished in the color from the 2012-2020 modern vehicles. It also features a very nice metallic black stripe with silver accents, that highlight the massive hood scoop and bulge. Finally, silver script on the hood lets everyone know you’ve got the biggest engine.
Expect this special racer to go for big money at auction later this month.
