After a sneak peek earlier this spring, GMC has finally debuted the 2024 Canyon AT4X AEV Edition. And it’s everything we expected, and then some. Because while, yes, nearly identical to the new Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison, there are a few surprises. And those in attendance at the 2023 Overland Expo Pacific Northwest event will be able to get a close-up look at this top-of-the-range midsized truck, which was designed with overlanding in mind.
What’s Special About The 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition?
Equipped with 35-inch tires, hot-stamped boron steel skid plates, steel rock sliders, steel bumpers, 1.5-inch lift, AEV Salta wheels, a high-output L3B turbo engine with 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, a 10-speed automatic transmission, and more cameras than an art museum, the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition brings together a unique combination of go-anywhere hardware that seeks to inspire driver confidence like nothing else.
Canyon AT4X AEV Edition Off-Road Specs
Thanks to the larger tires (35-inches from 33-inches), and a 1.5-inch lift compared to the standard Canyon AT4X, the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition improves on the standard truck with a 38.2-degree front approach angle, a 26.9-degree breakover angle and an optimized 26.0-degree departure angle. The truck also features a best-in-class 12.2 inches of ground clearance (yes, over a foot), as the new Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro boasts 11 inches of clearance, and Ranger Raptor offers 10.7 inches. In addition, front wheel travel remains 9.9 inches, while the rear will articulate some 11.6 inches. The new Ford Ranger Raptor can do 10 inches of front travel and 11.5 in the rear.
Should things get sticky, both front and rear steel bumpers feature integrated heavy-duty cast rear recovery points and front winch capability, while providing excellent durability and corrosion resistance. The rear bumper also features removable corners intended for easy removal and reinstallation, should a little contact happen along the trails.
For a little extra dust, the Canyon AT4X AEV Edition also has a launch control feature that engages during the Baja driving mode, helping the truck claw and grab at loose dirt and gravel with more precision. Off road cameras, like on the standard AT4X Canyon, are also present and accounted for. This allows for low-angle forward vision, underbody vision, and even a view that points toward the front tires, to aid in traversing whatever obstacle comes in the way, be it rock, wood, or post-apocalyptic wreckage.
2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition Pricing, Ordering And Availability
The 2024 Canyon AT4X AEV Edition is made in the USA at the GM Wentzville Assembly plant in Missouri, and is expected to be available for customer orders later this year. Pricing for the premium midsize truck is expected to start between $60,000 and $65,000 USD. Which, yes, is C8 Corvette money. But when’s the last time you’ve seen a Corvette driver cross the Rubicon trail with a three of their friends, and a bed full of gear?
