GM SHELVES PLANS TO BUILD AN ELECTRIC FORD MAVERICK FIGHTER: REPORT

A New Entry Level Truck From GM In The USA Remains Elusive

Chevrolet Montana Brazil Mexico Small Truck Ford Maverick Rival US Market Canada

At the beginning of last year, we covered a story regarding the possibility of General Motors creating a new small truck product for the USA and Canada markets to compete against the Ford Maverick. Already, the company has the Chevrolet S10 Max and the Chevrolet Montana pickup truck, both available in other countries. The latter of which competes with the Ford Maverick directly in Brazil and other South American markets.

However, when it came to offering a Ford Maverick rival in the USA and Canada, GM considered a small electric truck. Because… reasons. However, it appears that is no longer the case, based on the latest reports. According to Autoweek, GM has canceled plans for a Ford Maverick-sized EV pickup. Nissan has also put its compact pickup on ice.

Even as some contenders are ducking the fight, Ford can barely keep up with the demand for the Maverick, and other companies are allegedly working on their products. This includes Ram potentially bringing the Rampage to North America, and Toyota with its own unibody truck entry. Even brands like Subaru and Mitsubishi are rumored to be developing small trucks for the USA and Canada. Hyundai, meanwhile isn’t afraid to take on Ford with its Santa Cruz small truck.

This comes as General Motors has begun to course-correct its EV ambitions, due to their high costs and low take rates. GM CEO Mary Barra has even gone on record to say that some hybrid vehicles are coming instead.

The mysterious Ford Maverick fighter from General Motors, likely badged as a Chevrolet, could have been an excellent entry-level EV option for customers, but some things may not have checked out. It may have been too heavy to carry any meaningful payload, or it could have been simply too expensive of an entry price. In other words, the same issues we see in other electric trucks.

What do you think it’s going to take for more small trucks to be sold in the USA? Let us know in the comments below.

Zac's love for cars started at a young age, after seeing the popular Eleanor from Gone In 60 Seconds. From there, fascination and enthusiasm blossomed and to this day the Ford Mustang remains a favorite. His first job started out detailing cars, but also provided the opportunity to work on restoration including an 1968 Ford Mustang, Pontiac Firebird, and a C3 Corvette, though he left that job before further work and experience could be had. From there, he was a detailer at a car dealership before quitting that job to try and finish college.

Much of his free time while studying was spent watching YouTube videos regarding new cars, or off-roading. 4WD247 is a personal favorite channel which rekindled a dying flame in car enthusiasm, now tailored towards trucks and SUVs and the fun that can be had building up an overlanding rig, and going on adventures, though, that chapter remains unwritten for the time being.
