As soon as the GMC Hummer EV made its debut in October of last year, it was clear that General Motors’ first electric truck was not to be ignored. With four-digit output figures and styling reminiscent of the Hummers of yore, the electric pickup immediately captured massive amounts of attention from fans and buyers alike. As the company continues to iron out the pre-production truck ahead of its sales debut, they now have a new highlight reel to share with us all. More specifically, GMC has released a new video of the truck’s time in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where the automaker underwent some hardcore winter testing. Better yet however, this video was accompanied by some new info related to the debut date of the GMC Hummer EV SUV.
Let’s start with the new video shared by GMC. As MC&T reported back in December, General Motors sent the GMC Hummer EV to the Upper Peninsula to gauge how the truck will handle wintery conditions. This testing doesn’t simply look at how well a vehicle can handle driving in some snow however. Instead, the testing is more focused on how a vehicle’s components are able to handle sub-zero temperatures. This is doubly important for an electric vehicle, as their lithium-ion batteries are dramatically affected by extreme temperatures on either end of the spectrum. And while GMC hasn’t shared their findings from their trip Up North, we do get to see some of the Hummer’s more exclusive features in action.
Crab Walk Mode is on full display in the video clip, and it looks much cooler in action than the name implies. You can really get a feel for just how much angle the four-wheel steering system is able to crank into all four tires from the short clip. Speaking of four-wheel steering, we also get to see the truck rip off some neat donuts, which look far too small for a vehicle of that size. All and all, the truck looks like a riot out in the slippery stuff.
GMC decided to use this new video clip as a means to announce something much more important for customers however. That is because the automaker finally has given us an official debut date for the GMC Hummer EV SUV. According to the press release, customers can expect that to come on April 3, 2021. This comes after initial reports from dealers suggested that the GMC Hummer EV SUV would debut this month. Fans will either be able to head over to GMC’s website at 5:00 p.m. EDT to watch the unveiling, or they can simply tune into the NCAA Final Four broadcast at that same time. Considering last year’s Super Bowl-related antics, it’s clear that General Motors wants to capitalize on these massive sports fan audiences.
The Hummer nameplate was originally associated with SUV models, and as such it is exciting to see such a model return to the lineup. It is still somewhat perplexing as to why the automaker decided to roll out the pickup variant of the EV first, but we digress. It is also worth noting that interested parties will be able to reserve their own GMC Hummer EV SUV immediately following the April 3 debut event. If you weren’t able to get your name on one of the early trucks, you’ll soon have another shot at it.
