Today, Rivian unveiled the all-new R2 midsize SUV, which delivers a combination of performance, capability, and utility in a five-seat package optimized for big adventures and everyday use. The R2’s silhouette and face are distinctively Rivian, and it’s clear that the goal with this SUV is to have a more affordable electric offering than the R1T and R1S within its lineup.
2026 Rivian R2: Details
The Rivian R2 will feature two battery sizes. The larger pack will achieve over 300 miles of range on a single charge and offer 0-60 mph acceleration in under 3 seconds for the quickest powertrain configuration. Pricing for the Rivian R2 is expected to start at around $45,000. Rivian’s development teams have been intensely focused on cost throughout manufacturing, design innovation, and robust supply chain development to make the vehicle as cheap as possible.
The new Rivian platform consolidates and eliminates parts thanks to intelligent design, including high-pressure die castings, a structural battery unit where the top of the pack also serves as the floor, and closure systems that dramatically reduce complexity. The R2’s design prioritizes adventure and comfort with the capacity for the powered rear quarter windows to vent and the rear powered glass to drop fully for that greater open-air driving experience. On top of that, the seats fold completely flat, offering ample space for all the gear you might need for your adventures.
Enabling the R2 to launch earlier and with a lower price tag, Rivian plans to start production of R2 in its existing Normal, Illinois manufacturing facility. Beyond significantly reducing the amount of capital needed to bring the Rivian R2 to the market, the company believes this approach considerably reduces risk to the launch and associated ramp, efficiently leveraging its existing manufacturing and operations teams, and expands the total capacity for the site to 215,000 units per year. Those interested in reserving an R2 can do so today with a deposit of $100, with deliveries expected to begin in the first half of 2026.
