The Toyota 4Runner was initially created based entirely on the Tacoma; since then, it has evolved beyond its mid-size truck sibling, though the concept that both share similar DNA remains the same. That’s why when Toyota unveiled the Tacoma, most people had a decent idea of what to expect with the 4Runner regarding exterior and interior design. Also, Toyota uses a similar fascia for its new generation of 4WD vehicles, such as the Toyota Tundra, Sequoia, and Tacoma. Now, 4Runner fans can rejoice as their time is near as prototypes have been spotted testing in the wild, much to the dismay of the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco.
Next-Generation Toyota 4Runner Prototype: Details
The prototype in question was sighted testing in Arizona on Greenway Avenue and 55th, close to the Toyota proving grounds in Wittman. 4Runner6g forum user Henry posted a picture of his sighting to the website, and though we don’t get any view of the front of the vehicle, there’s still plenty to go on just from looking at the back.
To start, the car is sporting some heavy camouflage, with extra attention added from panel to panel at the back to make it exceedingly more difficult to discern what the taillights will look like for the next-generation Toyota 4Runner. When looking at the profile, however, the vehicle gives Lexus GX550 vibes, specifically at the rear door, which isn’t necessarily bad. Some design inspiration may be shared between the two off-road SUVs.
Another detail that is a bit more challenging to see is within the shot showing a close-up of the side profile of the 4Runner; if you look closely in front of the front wheel on the fender, there appear to be slots, which are reminiscent of the aero slots the 2024 Tacoma has within the fender which if nothing else adds a bit of aggression to the overall look of the vehicle.
So, we can assume that the next-generation Toyota 4Runner will share similar design queues with the 2024 Tacoma. That might also mean that the 4Runner will come with a hybrid powertrain offering as well, which is also a recurring theme with the new generation of Toyota pickup and SUVs. Still, beyond that, the vehicle could also share some design elements with the Lexus GX550, which would be interesting and could offer GX550 (Land Cruiser Prado) customers a cheaper alternative to an already legendary SUV.
