WHIPPLE ANNOUNCES MASSIVE 3.0L SUPERCHARGER FOR 2020 SILVERADO, SIERRA

Some Tuning Is Required, However

Contrary to popular reports, no, GM is not currently working on a supercharged Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra pickup truck. Sad, we know. However, there’s silver lining that needs to be shared. Whipple, one of the biggest names in superchargers, has finally released a kit for T1 GM trucks. This huge 3.0L twin-screw supercharger aims to cure any power woes one may have in regards to the 2019-2020 Silverado or Sierra, although the company has yet to officially estimate how much that horsepower will increase.

The Gen 5.0 Whipple 3.0L supercharger works for 2019-2020 GM full-size trucks with either the 5.3L L84 or 6.2L L87 V8 engines. However, it does require a tune from HP Tuners for the ECU to be compatible.

Later model GM engines with Global A architecture don’t have quite the ECU fortress of the new Global B electrical architecture seen on the C8 Corvette, but they’ve still been a challenge to modify. In fact, it took about a year for HP Tuners to figure out the E99 ECU found in the C7 Corvette ZR1, while a solution for the E90 ECU found in the 2020 Silverado and Sierra was announced last November at the 2019 SEMA Show. Therefore, Whipple launching the industry’s first twin-screw supercharger for T1 GM trucks is a major milestone for these models.

Whipple doesn’t provide any stats for this new Chevy Silverado supercharger, but details will certainly come. By comparison, Whipple’s supercharger system for older GM 6.2 liter L86 and 5.3 liter L83 V8 models sees power jumps by just over 150 hp on the L86, so expect similar gains for this new model. Given the standard 6.2 liter V8 in the current trucks pushes out 420 hp, buyers can expect somewhere well north of 500 hp from the Whipple supercharger with this engine, possibly close to 600 hp.

Buyers can also expect to pay dearly for the Whipple supercharger. It starts at a pricy $6,750, but that’s about what people should expect for the performance and quality it will bring. Along with the supercharger, you get an oversized intercooler, dual pass heat exchanger, high flow intake manifold, high flow water system, adjuster idler system, and upgraded spring loaded tensioner. For the price, then, you are getting far more than just a supercharger. And even though it comes in black as standard, but Whipple says they’ll paint it in almost any custom color.

If you’re looking to increase the power on your 2019-2020 Silverado or Sierra with a 5.3L or 6.2L engine, Whipple provides a high quality option that will probably provide lots of power. Just be willing to pay for that quality and power.
