For years now the Jeep Wrangler has been the go-to SUV for buyers looking for an open air experience. Thanks to countless patent filings, we know Ford has decided that they are going to gun for this crown with the highly anticipated Bronco. But now, it appears that GM has stepped up to join the fight against their crosstown rivals. According to a new press release, the 2022 Hummer EV (by GMC) will indeed feature removable roof panels of its own.
According to GMC, Hummer EV owners will be able to remove the front and rear roof panels from the vehicle courtesy of a dual T-bar setup. That is right folks, General Motors have finally given in and decided to give us T-tops once again. According to a report by Car and Driver, there will be four individual panels that can be removed, along with the front t-bar for a truer open-top experience. GMC says that removing and stowing the panels should be able to be completed by a single person, should you not have any helping hands around.

At this time we can only confirm that the removable body panels will be standard equipment on the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup, as GM has yet to confirm its presence on the SUV model. That said, we don’t have any reason to think they wouldn’t allow the SUV buyers to have the same open-air driving pleasure. That is especially true when you consider all of the hype surrounding the feature on the Ford Bronco.
We haven’t gotten a ton of details about the 2022 GMC Hummer EV up to this point, but this new information about the removable roof is surely a sign of things to come. Unlike Ford and their returning iconic model, General Motors appears to be much more forthcoming about what we can expect from the electric truck. For instance, we already know it will be radically powerful, thanks to the 1,000 horsepower and (a dubious) 11,500 lb-ft of torque that it will send through all four wheels, should you opt for a tri-motor setup. More affordable (less powerful) single and dual motor variants will be available.
When the Hummer EV truck and SUV officially go on sale, expect it to be offered in limited numbers, and expect it to be on the rather expensive side. You could also save your money and get a Ram Rebel TRX this fall, if you’re so inclined.
