Back in 2016, Chevrolet became an off-road sensation with the introduction of the Colorado ZR2. The mid-size truck has returned to lead the pack in the form of the all-new 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, but if you’re looking to take the max-performance model’s design even further with a host of racing-inspired design and capability features. The special-edition ZR2 Desert Boss package may be your cup of tea.

The 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 now has a set of standard 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires, reworked suspension geometry that moves the Multimatic DSSV dampers to an outboard location, and improved approach, departure, and breakover angles. The new off-road specs for the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 include:

  • 10.7 inches of ground clearance.
  • 38.3 degrees of approach angle.
  • 25.1 degrees of departure angle.
  • 24.6 of breakover angle.

Now that we’ve recapped what the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 offers let’s look at how the Desert Boss package adds to the off-road truck. The 33-inch tires mentioned before are wrapped around 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels for when airing down is necessary on the trails. Up front, a off-road bumper with a brushguard accessory accentuate the truck’s design. In back, the Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss package adds a sports bar with sail panel on the sides, a roof-mounted light bar, an underbody camera, unique “Desert Boss” decals, and black emblems.

The new Colorado ZR2 has the same turbocharged 2.7L L3B four-cylinder as the other 2023 models. However, it’s exclusively getting the high-output variant which GM estimated to be 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. That’s V8 levels of highly accessible force. Fuel economy numbers haven’t been finalized yet, but they’ll likely be somewhere around what we saw with the EPA testing cycle of the outgoing four-cylinder Colorado.

Production of the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss package, along with the rest of the new Colorado family, is expected to begin in the first half of 2023. Pricing will be announced at a later date.

Zac's love for cars started at a young age, after seeing the popular Eleanor from Gone In 60 Seconds. From there, fascination and enthusiasm blossomed and to this day the Ford Mustang remains a favorite. His first job started out detailing cars, but also provided the opportunity to work on restoration including an 1968 Ford Mustang, Pontiac Firebird, and a C3 Corvette, though he left that job before further work and experience could be had. From there, he was a detailer at a car dealership before quitting that job to try and finish college.

Much of his free time while studying was spent watching YouTube videos regarding new cars, or off-roading. 4WD247 is a personal favorite channel which rekindled a dying flame in car enthusiasm, now tailored towards trucks and SUVs and the fun that can be had building up an overlanding rig, and going on adventures, though, that chapter remains unwritten for the time being.
