Off-road enthusiasts flock towards aftermarket bumpers for their improved durability and increased approach and departure angles. They tend to give a more aggressive look, too. But most aftermarket bumpers, front and rear, will always be constrained by the basic chassis and body lines of the vehicle. Not so for the Relentless Fabrication high clearance rear bumper for the Chevy Colorado ZR2. This bumper actually requires owners to cut the bottom of the truck bed to fit, hugely improving rear ground clearance and departure angles while giving some pre-runner-esque looks.

Specifically, the bumper adds 5.5 inches of rear ground clearance. And that’s not only in the direct rear, but also the sides, because of the cutting required. The cuts are made at the rear side of the back fender, and bring the fender and bumper in right below the tailgate and in line with one another.   Because the lower bed is cut out on the sides as well as the back, the protection goes further around the sides than other bumper options.

Even though the Relentless Fabrication high clearance bumper will primarily go to ZR2 owners, it works with all Chevy Colorado models from 2015 onward. The bumper is made of steel, and gets 3/4 inch steel through-welded recovery points and 1/2 inch mounting plates. It also works with the OEM license plate lights, and has a high-clearance tow hitch hidden behind the plate. It also comes with reverse light cutouts made specifically for Baja Design LEDs.

When ordering the Relentless Fabrication high clearance bumper, Chevy Colorado and Colorado ZR2 owners can choose between bare metal or a black powder coated covering. Buyers can also add on Relentless Fab’s tailgate tire carrier for additional cost. All together, the bumper retails for $1,149. Relentless Fab says Chevy Colorado ZR2 owners should expect to wait at least 12-16 weeks for orders to ship, longer for powder coated bumpers.

It’s a pricy bumper, and you’ll have to wait for it, but there’s little else like it on the market. Buyers will know they have the ultimate rear ground clearance and departure angles with this awesome looking part.
