The 2021 Ram TRX is coming with many firsts. It’ll be the first production pickup with the Hellcat engine, the first truck to crack the 700 hp barrier and the first true competitor to the Ford F-150 Raptor. Now, FCA is adding to that list, announcing the TRX will be the first product to get the new “Know & Go” mobile augmented reality app.

The app will use the owners smartphone camera and Augmented Reality technology to provide an innovative way for owners to learn about their vehicles features. Hovering the camera over the steering wheel will show customers how to use the steering wheel controls or paddle shifters, while pointing at the dashboard will show infotainment functionality. In many ways, think of it as an owner’s manual for the modern age. The app will have both informational readings and how-to videos explaining the features owners select.

Over time, Ram TRX owners will be able to discover new features on their vehicle through the app. If one is sticking around the owner hasn’t yet found, the app will send push notifications encouraging owners to look for it.

It’ll also go beyond AR functionality. The Know & Go app will have a feature specific owners manual built in, using modern graphics and videos to bring the manual up to date. Users will be able to look up a specific vehicle function or information inside the app.

The idea for the app was actually introduced at the first ever FCA Pitch Night, where a group of FCA employees presented the app’s concept. This initiative allows employees to create ideas focused on connectivity and infotainment. There were over 500 ideas that were narrowed down to 50 and then 14 before Know & Go won the competition. The app was developed in just three months to roll out on the 2021 Ram TRX. The wild truck will be the first vehicle to use the Know & Go app, and it will be available on other FCA vehicles down the line. If this useful app is just the first thing introduced from the Pitch Night program, we look forward to seeing what else comes from future competitions.
