As spring starts to draw nearer, spy photographers are starting to capture 2022 model year prototypes doing some testing. And while much of this excitement has surrounded the 2022 Corvette Z06, the mid-engined sports car isn’t the only GM product spied recently. Thanks to the folks over at TFL, we have a look at the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado or 2022 GMC Sierra GM pickups trucks undergoing some high-altitude testing in Colorado.

The video kicks off with TFL’s camera man driving through a Colorado strip mall, when he pulls up behind one of these GM pickup truck prototypes. While he initially isn’t entirely sure what he is looking at, it doesn’t take long to conclude that this truck is either a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 or 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. The dead giveaway is the cab of the truck, with proportions matching that of GM’s T1 platform trucks on the market. The mirrors also match exactly.

After turning into a hotel parking lot, the spy photographer notices that there are several of these pickups traveling together, all covered in camouflage. That is, except for the doors of the trucks, which are easily identifiable by the GM door handles. Furthermore, a brand new Chevrolet Tahoe with a manufacturer plate can be seen parked with the pickups, further hinting at the General Motors connection.

While these 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 or 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 prototypes don’t offer any new giveaways, it is a good sign to see them out for high-altitude testing. We already know that these trucks are slated to enter production at some point in late 2021 or early 2022, and this testing suggests work isn’t slowing down. The 2022 model year will represent the first facelift of the truck since the new generation made its debut in 2019. Crucially, we know that GM has plans to address the comparative weak point of the trucks: the interior.

GM confirmed to MC&T at the Chicago Auto Show last year that the new 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks will draw interior “similarities” from the new line of Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs. Perhaps this is one of the reasons that the Tahoe was along for the ride in Colorado. That said, the spy photographer noted that the interior of all of the trucks were covered up, which prevented him from getting any shots.

That said, GM at least confirmed that Super Cruise hands-free driving technology will make its way into these high-margin machines with the 2022 model year refresh.

Either way, it doesn’t look like we are going to have to wait much longer before we get to see these GM trucks for real.
