We first reported on the mysterious details surrounding the upcoming 2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2. And now, we have exclusive details to share about the upcoming 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X.
The GMC Sierra AT4X will launch alongside the upcoming (and finally confirmed) Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 for the 2022i model year, next year. This will happen once the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTD and GMC Sierra 1500 Limited run their course. These two variants are being used as placeholder models to cover up for COVID and microchip shortage production setbacks that have been observed over the past 30 months.
2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X Details
As we have currently seen through decades of shared hardware between GMC and Chevrolet, the same will be the case when it comes to the Sierra 1500 AT4X and Silverado 1500 ZR2. But they’ll be sold in different dealerships, most of the time. With that said, here are some exclusive details we can share about the upcoming Sierra AT4X, which will be the most off-road capable pickup truck ever from GMC, save for the upcoming Hummer EV. The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X will have:
- Multimatic DSSV Dampers
- 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler tires
- 6.2L L87 V8 engine (the exclusive power unit for now, carried over from what we see today)
- 10-speed automatic transmission
- 2-inch lift compared to the base Sierra 1500
- Electronic locking front and rear differentials
- Unique chassis tuning
- Crew Cab configuration, exclusively
- Skid plates protecting essential underbody parts
- Improved departure and approach angles from the standard Sierra AT4
- Unique exterior badges and interior details
- GM Global B electrical architecture (GM VIP) and encrypted control modules.
For those looking for a supercharger on the V8 like with the Ram 1500 TRX, or 35+ inch tires around the wheels like the new Ford F-150 Raptor, sorry. This ain’t it. However, the GMC Sierra AT4X, as well as the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2, are expected to undercut both trucks when it comes to price. This alone should be enough to help bring in would-be Raptor and TRX customers through the door. That’s especially true for those interested in low-speed rock crawling, based on GM’s fantastic engineering of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, and applying this proven formula to a larger scale.
MC&T will have more details to share on the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X soon, especially as the calendar creeps closer to the reveal date of the refreshed Sierra 1500 lineup, which is expected to be this fall.
Curious…. There is a GM site reporting that this is going to be an AT4-X “Limited”…. Which would indicate this is not going to be the refreshed truck? There has also been no confirmation that the ZR2 will have locking diff or multimatic shocks (although it make sense it should)… So is this speculation or did this come from a legit credible GM source? Just wondering, thanks!

Let me know the Diesel is added and then I will buy one immediately. The 6.2 is incredible, but with this platform, I’d expect single digit MPG numbers.
